Hi, please take a look at the link for dry food recommendations. I go by the pack instructions for guideline amounts and that is usually about right.

I find the pack instructions too much for Bailey, he looked swollen with the amount it said on the pack! So I give him 75g 3 times a day and he's full of energy and healthy looking!

Have a look at the dry food reccomendations link.

I never go on guidelines, depends on the exersize, look, feel of the dog. Guidelines are just that, guidelines Xx

He's always running around playing in the garden with his toys? He is underwieght only weighs about 10kg is that bad?

Was feeding him twice a day on pedigree 100 grams 2x a day? So should I put him on 3x on like 75grams and better food?

My pup is 11kg and eats science plan dry food with a James well beloved pouch of wet food /topper mixed with it- she's a fussy so and so but at the moment it's working!!

She's also 6 months old so very similar, although boys do normally weigh more than girls!

They'll put on weight in their own time, as long as u can't see prominent ribs sticking out I'd say he's alright ... Maybe post a pic if u want people's opinions but I would consider changing from pedigree to be honest

I'll have to book a check up with thew vets to see if he is healthy weight?

Gonna buy him some better food and see if that does anything and feed about 220 grams and day what do you think?

Dont know about pedigree, but I would switch to a better brand of food, not every dog is the same so just judge by the look of your dog and if he has enough energy etc. what's good for my dog could be too much/not enough for yours!

All dogs grow at different rates. I used to think Suki was too small as well then in a month or two she started to grow really quickly. As long as he doesn't have more than the back two ribs visible, if he is in really good shape and very well exercised than he is about right.

Hi

11kgs is fine, dont allow him to get much over 18kg when fully grown though.

The food I feed my trio I give once daily and full scoop each meal. A scoop is the equivalant size to a large mug.

It will also depend on how active your dog is as to how much you should him also.
Usually you can see for yourself if what your feeding is enough as you should be able to see if they are maintaining their weight or not, if your usure of their weight get them weighed regularly with the vet and keep a diary to check progress.

Any more help you need please just gimme a shout

I personally stay away from feeding raw meet and have never fed mince of any kind to my dogs.

When they were little I used to feed rice/pasta with fish and chicken as an extra to help bulk them up. It is also good when they are poorly too.

Now mine are fully grown I stick to chicken flavour dried food and always check protein contents to ensure quality. I do this as I have found they become picky if I kept changing flavour/brand. I found one they like that also dosent go straight through them like most brands had done before.

Once you find one that he likes stick with it as you should see huge improvements with coat and conditon all round.

You can give omega 3 capsules (1000mg) once a day or cod liver to enhance coat conditon= Omega is bar far the better. This can be given daily for his entire life and will not harm him.
Mine have had Omega 3 since 9 months old and they shine lovely

It just my personal opinion, I would never feed anything with blood in it. I know Ive heard people say 'once they taste blood they want it again' I dont know how true this is but dont want to chance it.

My friends used used to feed thiers raw all the time and they had really smelly and sloppy poo with it also.

Like I say its just my personal choice to not feed it.

Dont over do his exercising if he is only 6 months old.

If you over do it with him now you can damage his muscles and joints as he is still forming. This is why agility training etc cannot be commenced until 12 + months old.

Just regular walks at this age to keep him fit, please dont over do it with him yet

Claire Billy has had raw food since 10 weeks old, he fit and healthy and looks good, there are no preservatives or additives.

Don't say things like that it's puts people off starting raw or barf, all dogs are different, what they tolerate or what is good for them, it is just a myth an old wife's tale about blood. Billys has a brilliant diet

I am a professional behaviour psycholgist and trainer, not a dog neutrionalist.

I mentioned that I wasnt sure how true the 'blood' thing was and if people read all the posts I made on the raw food subject they would see I explained myself.

If any one asked for neutritional advice on raw food or BARF diet I would explain to them just like I had done here that I had had bad experiances and wasnt my choice and if they wanted information on it they needed to talk to someone else who sucessfully uses that type of diet for their dogs.

That really isn't true at all, and I'm surprised that someone who has obviously studied dogs would believe this old wives tale. The taste of blood won't make them 'want more' or turn them nasty, wanting to kill! Also, a raw fed dog generally has smaller, less smelly poos. If you feed raw tripe their poo might be a little softer, but not otherwise.

The mistake some people make with raw is not realising that some dogs are intolerant of certain meats. For example my Dempsey cannot tolerate poultry, and if he gets that he has smelly, runny poos. He has beef & lamb with a small amount of pork occasionally & his poos are perfectly normal. His teeth are far cleaner than commercial food fed dogs (without the need to clean them) and his breath is less smelly.

We did not cover raw feeding in depth as we were not training to be dog neutrionalists, and when I had experiance of this type of diet the results were not pleasent.

No I dont.
I said I was unsure of how true it was

I dont feed raw and I am not versed in what is good within the raw diet which is why I said previously if someone asked me about it I would not advise them on something I had no proper knowledge on and tell them to seek advice from someone who sucessfully fed this type of diet.

I agree. I'm always saying in posts about raw feeding that not all dogs or owners will settle with it. I know some people just can't stomach giving raw meat & bones to their dogs, and some dogs just won't touch it!

However, it's a good way of feeding as long as you do your research first & try to feed a varied diet.

My Staffy Empty Re: My Staffy

Post by Diwrnach Sun Feb 05 2012, 17:14

I feed mine royal canin, and she does really well on it, I used to also feed some canned meat as well as biscuits as she really enjoyed it, but it used to give her really bad wind, and she would also get the runs alot on it.

As for amounts, I seem to have an unusual dog as I put down a full bowl of biscuits, twice as a day and she will eat what she wants and leave the rest, she doesnt gorge herself and eat every scrap untill she is ill like other dogs I have had.

Little edit, she will also regularly have a bone of some description, but I have spoken to 3 different vets so far and all have said NOT to feed a RAW diet, no idea why.

I feed my boy James Wellbeloved with healthy scraps e.g leftover chicken, fish.
Sometimes I buy him a salmon fillet or a steak for a treat, but I can't afford to give him that everyday and I never get a chance to go to the butchers anymore. I used to get him raw lamb ribs and things like that.
I suggest Arden Grange out of the two, i've heard good things about it.
Its a myth about 'taste of blood'. Dogs are descended from hunting carnivores, eating raw meat and blood is natural, although some dogs can be allergic to some meats and poultry believe it or not! Smile
Romeo has several times seen me nick myself with the kitchen knife etc and come to see whats wrong, he sniffed at the blood and looked disgusted. Laughing
