Post by Guest Mon Jan 30 2012, 12:02

watching a amimal rescue program and they got reports of a pit being kept at address they went no dog to be found but when searching the garden they found a spring pole and the rspca officer says the only reason you would have one is for fight training angry
i myself were going to put one up in the summer but dont think i will bother now if thats what people think when they see them.
its just a shame that a play thing can give such the wrong ideas to so narrow minded people
i would have thought better of the rspca Sad

Sounds silly to me. They are great for exercise but it's sad that a represenative of the RSPCA would be so uneducated on the subject.

same misinformation is rampant in my country about treadmills. fact is some days we just can't get out as much as i'de like so treadmills help for some. still, the "only used for fight training" nonsense is thrown around like "fact". >=P

Well, they are used to train fighters, but you could say the same about almost any form of training aid!

When all's said & done, you choose whatever health training aids that suit you & your dog. Obviously what you do with your fit dog is another matter entirely.

Stupid RSPCA. Again.

Yep ... springpoles are a conditioning aid for fighters, but as said, any form of "work" is really !

As some might be aware, I consider my Max's weekend excercise to be "work", because he ... well, works hard Tongues but I realise that if people were to see him walking beside me dragging a barrell for short periods between his playtimes (which he loves by the way) they would prob think the same Rolling Eyes however I am lucky, in that I have access to private land for training him .. it just wouldnt be worth the negative attention if I didnt doh

At the end of the day, if ignorant people see you excercising a bull breed any other way than throwing a ball in the park .... he must be a fighter ... right !! at wits end

Normally just a peice of heavy rope, hide, a tough toy etc, hanging from a tree, or a heavy duty extention spring, that the dog can either jump upto or reach with their back feet still touching the ground, and hang onto !!

it developes jaw muscle, bite power, neck and back muscles.

I personnally dont like them too much, as the teeth take a right hammering Sad , and IMO to have it at a height where the dog has to leave the ground to reach it is a no no thumbs down

this is just a question so no putting your caps lock on to shout at me. what kind of training benefits do you get from these poles and why do you so it.
i can understand the barrel because it is part of the training for what that dog does. i can understand jumps see saws etc cos of agility. what is the purpose of the pole and the training

Purely to get your dog as fit as you possibly can. And of course the dog loves it! It strengthens the neck, jaw, shoulder & back muscles & makes them more defined.

I have one because Monte loves it. He is high energy and it gets him worn out at times. Doesn't make him aggressive or anything and he actually wants Frosty to join in, but Frosty is too young and I won't let him. Think of it more like extreme tug. Agree that it should be done in private and with soft rope or material to preserve teeth. I also don't like him hanging where he can't reach the ground. It is really loads of fun and I participate as he likes me to move it about for him to chase. I rigged mine up in a way that I can easily take it down so it isn't obviouse what it is as many people don't understand it.

The RSPCA, for all their good intentions really do have a lot of idiots working there.

I'm setting one up for Jimi when he gets a bit older.I use the flirtpole quite a bit with him aswell, he absolutely loves it.
