need help, am I doing right.
Hey im new here, I have recently got a 7 week old staffy girl and named her keyta . She's a little angel with a pure white head and neck and all four paws with a bridle back and tail and a black spot behind the ear, , and I love her to bits. Slight problems though, she's constantly biting and nipping. I have tried ignoring her, saying no, yelping at her and no matter what I do she listens the first couple of times then she ignores it, and she's starting to slip back into old habbits eg barking back, growling and snapping . Also she Crys quite alot especially when im not around, if I sit on the sofa she will come crying at my legs, I used to pick her up most of the time but I feel as though im starting to mother her.. So now I just keep putting her in her bed but she cadets on crying? . Finally my other dog and keyta get on like a house on fire, except when keyta wants to play she's constantly biting my other dog. My other dog is too soft to have a go back even though its hurting her, how can I stop keyta from biting my other dog. I feel as though im doing something wrong can some one help please. X

Re: need help, am I doing right.
Hi and welcome from Rocky and me.
For the biting and nipping carry on with the saying no and ignoring her, she will catch on that it's not gaining any attention. You need to make sure if that there is anyone else in the house to do the same thing. Be persistant and patient. Give praise for good behaviour and a small treat if you wish. Bad behaviour turn your back and ignore.
As for the other dog I don't know as I have only ever had one at a time. Someone here will know I am sure.
Hope this helps if only a little.

Re: need help, am I doing right.
Hi & welcome to the forum.
Don't forget that your girl is still a very young pup & training doesn't click overnight. She'll need lots of patience & you'll need to be consistent.
Every time she bites tell her "no" (or some people yelp to imitate the pup's siblings) and turn away from her - make no further contact with her until she's calm, don't even look at her.
The crying you'll have to just ignore. Don't lift her up or sympathise with her - she's crying to get what she wants, and if you give in she'll do it for the rest of her life! When she stops crying, give her some fuss so she knows that she only gets attention when she's quiet.
The playing with your other dog is, I'm afraid, inevitable. That's how pups play, and believe me, if it was too much for the other dog she would put her in her place. If Keyta hurts your other dog, she will growl and/or snap at her & tell her off. Keyta will accept that because that's what her mother would do. It's all part of her growing up - learning how far she can or can't go!
You're not really doing anything wrong, I just think that you may need a little more patience than you first thought you would!
Good luck, she'll get there in the end & I'm ssure she'll be a fantastic companion to you & your other dog (what's the other dog's name & breed, by the way?).

Re: need help, am I doing right.
Sound advice Caryll, Monty is still a biter / nipper even if we just want to smooth him. I'm hoping he is going to grow out of this.

Neville is a biter too! We are making the "yip" sound when he does it but it seems to wind him up further! We turn our back or take him out of the room and ignore him for a short time. It's slowly, and I mean slowly starting to work! He seems to have a mad moment around 10pm every night!

He's a BT. It takes a bit longer to train the biting out of BTs cause they tend not to have the same sort of I-mustn't-bite-humans mentality that staffs have! He will grow out of it, though, as long as you keep making sure he knows it's not acceptable.

Re: need help, am I doing right.
Thankyou for the help and advice my other dog is a lhasa apso, called Anna. A girl with a lot of pateince. She didn't cry once last night, I will try to ignore her but its so hard when my babies crying. But will try my best, as for the biting. Its beginning to be more of the softer bite, but more often. We try walking away from her after she has stopped and she's back there at our ankles. Rome wasn't built in as day though. weve got her injections and chipping tomorow, just can't wait to get her on walkies where I can burn some of her energy off thankyou again.
Re: need help, am I doing right.
It's hard to ignore them and it seems mean but it's for the best. They will also sometimes follow you when you turn your back. Patience and consistancy is the key. If everyone treats them the same evertime they will learn.
Sounds like you are on the right track though.

Re: need help, am I doing right.
If she continues to follow you & nip your ankles, just calmly pick her up (don't say a word - you've already told her "no") and put her out of the room for a couple of minutes, then let her back in.
Honestly, she will start to respond very soon!
Once she can go out for walks she'll have other things to concentrate on so she'll be a little better anyway!
