Puppy Help Empty Puppy Help

Post by mortalnikki Tue Jan 10 2012, 09:43

Sorry if i have posted this in the wrong section.
My puppy was born 8-10-2011 and i got her from a friends friend(met the mum& the other puppies)now my first dog was a German Sheppard cross Alaskan malamute called Tyson lovely very friendly i got him from 6weeks old that was 15 years ago i then got a female German Sheppard cross Xena who i later found out was abused.

When Tyson died my Xena went depressed& it was suggested by a so called friend to get another dog when i called the rescue center i went met& ended up getting Jack at the time 7 months old who had plenty of issues, who now thanks to some guys when i took him to the vet day before my husbands funeral cause Jack barked at his dog which i dealt with decided to swear at me threaten to beat me& my dog up this physically&mentally shook me which has lead to me being frightened to take him out.

Back to Venus as i said i got her on the 25-11-2011(day before my birthday)now at the time she was 7 weeks old
& everything i knew about puppies had seem to have gone out of the window.
At the moment iam using puppy pads which i put in her play pen also since her last injections i have been putting her on an extender lead and outside when the other dogs go as i call it pee poo.

I understand that she is bound to have the occasionally accident but day before yesterday even though i was putting her in her playpen(which has her food bed and puppy pads in)& putting her out she seemed to be coming in and weeing& at night i take her up with me as she sleeps on the bottom of my bed she had been out and then peed on my bed i had gotten very angry and had shouted at her,and she had a tap on her bottom.

Yesterday i put her outside at 6am she did a wee and then come in and did a wee and a poo and please dont think iam an evil person but i did give her a smack i sat down and cried one cause i smacked and second because i feel like a failure

I phoned my local vets for some advice and explained that iam putting her out but she is coming in and messing well she had ago at me for shouting at her and for smacking her(which i felt bad about) she said to me to get rid of the puppy pad and to make sure that i put her out first thing in the morning after food and every hour for 10 minuets i . said iam doing that then she had ago at me for not having Venus in a puppy training i explained two reasons why i hadn't which is one my debit card had been canceled(cause it was slightly tatty) and that where the puppy classes were i couldn't get to as they were in clapham and i dont drive.

I have contacted my local rescue center aras and have been told that they do puppy classes which is about 40 mins away.

So basically im after any puppy advice.

You have to do what your vets said. Back to basics and taking her out every 15 mins, before play, after play, after food and so on. Your really not going to get anywhere by shouting and smacking her and you really shouldn't as this will cause anxiety and make the whole situation worse.

When she toilets in the house, clean it up thoroughly with no fuss and take her out. When she goes outside give her lots of praise and a treat. You already have your command word which is great, now you just have to have the patience and be consistent with your traing.

One day it will click into place I promise you that Xx

Right. Firstly, don't beat yourself up because you smacked your pup and shouted at her. No, it won't do any good & yes, it could make her anxious & confused. But you've done the right thing by asking for advice! Big Grin

As Janey says you need to go right back to basics. Remember that puppies do not have full control of their bladders & bowels, and it takes some longer than others to gain that control. She isn't doing it to spite you or to push you beyond your limits. She's doing it because she doesn't know what else to do!

Pop her outside every 15 - 30 minutes & use a 'trigger' word. If she toilets outside then loads of praise, and maybe a little treat. If she does it inside, totally ignore it & put her outside (keep your cool!). Then clean the accident up without saying a word. I wouldn't use puppy pads; if you're taking her outside regularly then she shouldn't need them, and sometimes they encourage a pup to want to go inside.

Staffs love getting attention & praise from their families and I doubt that Venus is any different, so she'll soon associate going for a wee or a poo outside with attention & going inside means she gets nothing.

As to your vets, ignore the stupid person! They've been very unhelpful. It isn't always possible to attend puppy training classes (although I do recommend them if you can get to one) and that doesn't make you a bad owner!

As a last bit of advice, though, please don't smack your pup. She can only do what she's been taught to do. If she's doing something wrong, you have to show her what is right. The praise she gets for doing the right thing will get her to learn so much quicker! Smile

Good luck, and if you need to ask anything else, don't hesitate!

How long is a piece of string, some it clicks into place very quickly, others just take longer to get there.

I would try taking her out more often, every 15mins, even though the door is open she needs to be reminded why! Xx

Agree with Janey. Your pup is still very young and devolping bladder control. If the smell is left over in the house it will encourage her to go there again. If you take her out and praise her when she goes she will catch on.

If you yell or hit her she will associate using the toilet as being a bad thing and just cause the problem to get worse. I'm afraid it just takes patience

totaly agree with all the above. so lonmg as your pup is healthy, happy and sociable it doesnt matter if you dont go to training classes. plenty walks round other dogs nd people like on the park will keep the pup socialised.

Yes, it really does vary!

I've been rtying to remember how long it took my previous dogs, but I can't remember back that far! Laughing

I know that my forst collie was only about 12 weeks old when she was housetrained and one of my GSDs was about the same. Bandit was house trained by about 5 months or so but Dempsey was over 7 months old before it finally clicked! But then he's thick as two short planks! Rolling Eyes

Post by Guest Tue Jan 10 2012, 11:03

our last dog was a GSD and we got him when he was 5 and a half weeks. we started toilet trianing at 8 weeks and would put a pad down but when his front feet were on it he thought he was all on it so missed (bless him). it took about 3 days for him to get the message on where to go. lemmy took a few weeks. cant remember how long it took any others.

as with all our dogs we put the pads down and when they started to go somewhere else they were taken to the pad. when they went on the pad it was GOOD BOY have a treat. the pad was then moved closer to the door then every time they were taken in the garden the pad went too till the pad was outside and not inside then it was gradualky taken away completely when we thought the dog was ready. they get the message at their own pace all we can do is praise the good and show them when they get it wrong

The pet stores sell products designed to eliminate the smell. Household cleaners will also work as long as they aren't ammonia based.

We use the pads as well with the same method. We still keep one down when we go out just in case she has to go.

Just a little tip - use diluted biological washing liquid to wipe up accidents. It's a lot cheaper & it completely gets rid of the smell!

I think this is normal as well. If she were going after ears or paws it could turn play into something more serious. It's really all about understanding body language and knowing your dog. If it turns aggressive then simply seperate them before it gets serious.

Here's a link that should help.
