HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
Hi me and my girlfriend have a 6 month old female staffy, She Is fairly well trained sits stays comes on command etc etc.. But the one thing she still doesnt do very well Is walk nicely on the lead, We tryed different methods on lead training her, She seems to be easily distracted and really stuborn to walk to heal, I was thinking of trying treats with the clicker, Has anybody used this method and has It been succesful ? , Or any other methods that work and are effective, Thanks people .

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
the way i stopped mine from pulling was clicker and good old stop and start.
Whenever they would even walk a bit too much ahead or start to pull i would stand still! wait untill they returned to heel and sat down, then i would reward and be on my way again, repeating the process when needed etc.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
The only problem with the stop method is you could get a really stubborn dog that'll just stop exactly where it is & not budge!
I use the turn around & walk the other way method, which works for me, but it's a matter of trial & error & seeing which method suits you & your dog.
I haven't used clickers, mainly cause Dempsey just isn't food motivated!

The turn around method works well for us. We also have taken to using a clicker because Suki loves to eat.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
hi, we have a now 10 1/2 month old who was a bug*er for pulling on the lead, yet would walk to heal off (almost always!) I click my fingers and say heal intermittently with praise and just a touch. We also happened to get a thinner collar which helped a little and then a slip lead (the ones that tightened when pulled with a stopper) which also helps/helped. Some days are better than others. I'm keen to try one of those harnesses that somehow pull their shoulders or something for a more or less tug free walk!

I personally would never use a harness for an already pulling dog especially bully breed because all their strengh is in their chest area and the harness make it more comfortable for them to pull/lean forward against, I would suggest the halti head collar or the gentle leader worked wonders on my three especially if used correctly and introduced correctly, It doesn't stop them from playing/panting/eating/drinking etc but it does stop pulling its really good for healing.

The halti worked for us. I think Tyson hated it so much he thought he had better walk at heel. Have not looked back. Halti also gives the handler confidence and a sense of what it feels like to have a relaxed walk.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
thanks for that. What size halti for a staff? The harness I was on about wasn't a regular one (I'm sure I read on here about it) it kind of pulled some where else on their body so they were unble to len into it as you speak of.

If you're interested in clicker training, have a look at this book...

It helps you to see that you're not alone & that any dog can be trained!

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!!!
I think Halti's go by head size. I had a medium for Tyson but he was about 8 months when I used it. I have been looking at the Sporn No Pull harness and the principle looks sound. http://sporn.com/training/mesh-non-pull-harness/

I know which harness your on about the lead connects to a the chest of the harness not the back it works kind of like the halti where it turns the body around when the dog pulls forward as the head halti pulls the head around. I believe its size 2 which is for staffies but of course every staffy is different so perhaos go to a pet shop where he can be measured.
I would suggest the head halti though not the harness again for complete control.
