intro for me and missey

Post by missey on Tue 27 Oct 2009, 17:47

hello guys help me please
my name is steve my dog missey is a 7 year black wight chested bitch ,ill put up pic soon, missey for 6 years has been a perfect member of my famialy, she was here before kids, and was no prob on arriavle of kids, she never damaged any of our possesions ormy house.never showen any aggersion and still dont she is so lovable and much fun,but 10 mounth ago i got into falconery, and abtaine my first hawkwhich is kepet in a mews at endof garden.but indirectly has drove my dog nuts, she pays the hawk no attention but since the arrival of bird she has become so nervase if left home alone, she has damaged my house and more wooringly herself,to start she wore her nails to the wick causing bleading on my radeator under a window, after much time trying to reasure her position in our pack, she was getting worse.so left me no option but to keep her in one room if leaving her on her own to limit damage to my house,so she started to bit and pull on door frame desperitlay which has resulted in her crcking her knines, reluctently ive had to purchase a dog cage,so she dont injure herself when my wife gose shopping, its breaking my heart,i love my dog and it hurts me to see her turn from a content calm dog to a nervice reack which is hurting herself and recking my house.wat is going on any ideas of how to resolve this please.
let me say she is only on her own at home when my wife goes shhoping ect,and she is fine when has company.

Hi Steve, firstly - don't feel guilty about a dog cage, they are a fantastic training tool, I own 4 dogs and they each have a seperate cage which they are more than happy in!

Secondly, I'm afraid I don't know anything about birds or the effect they can have on dogs, have you heard of or tried using a DAP diffuser in conjunction with the cage?

It looks like a plug in air freshener, and you plug it in next to the cage and it releases dog appeasing pheremones (DAP) which calm dogs down straight away, dogs can also safely be given Bach Rescue Remedy (its made from flowers and stuff) straight onto the tongue or in the water.

Have you had her checked over by a vet to make sure there are no physical problems?

Well as long as the vet said physically she was ok then you have to work on the basis that its an emotive or mental issue. I do think there may be occasions where a phyical problem could make her do those things but it sounds unlikely.

Try leaving her with a kong thats stuffed and frozen as this will occupy her for a good hour too, leave the radio on low when you leave too and see how she is then.

Its a large pyramid shaped "rubber" toy, you will need the black extreme one. You stuff it with kibble, treats, melted cheese, peanut butter etc and freeze it and the dogs spend ages trying to get everything out of the hole.

Yes you can they are about a tenner but worth every penny, don't waste money on the kong stuffing in there though make your own its better for the dog and cheaper

Hi & Welcome to The Forum

Our also adore their Kongs and it does take their mind of you when you leave Smile

If you like I could suggest a dog behaviourist if the above fails to do the trick - but Watts suggestions are all worth a try for a while 1st - great suggestions there for you to work on Smile

Do you just have the one hawk?

Hi Steve

First of all, a very warm welcome to you

Was the mews built and the hawk put straight into it? Did Missy every go in it before the hawk arrived?
I am just wondering if it is the bird that has caused this or was is because you built the mews at the same time and she is nervous of that rather than the bird itself?
I only have experience of a parrot with my dogs which is in the front room and it has never bothered them, even when it is shouting at them.
I would def try the kong they are great and don't worry about the cage, she will soon get used to it and it is for her own safety at the moment

Hi Steve and Missey, welcome.
I just wanted to say Hi as you sound very upset by Misseys behaviour. Unfortunately I cant offer any advice on this as I have not experienced this problem but looking at the above you have already had some brilliant advice.
Hope Missey settles back down again soon.
