Hi from Babe, Kerrin and Becca.
Hi everyone, good to meet you all.
We were wondering where to post a question about dealing with bonfire night, as its really not going very well for Babe. She was badly abused as a pup and then looked after by someone who we think used fear and a bit of force to keep her in line. We got her from Dogs Trust when she was about 1 and a half to 2 years old last December. When we first had her she had a whole host of problems, from being way too submissive to humans, scared of most men, getting into quite vicious fights with other dogs, scared of the dark and very scared of noises. Her confidence has come on so much in the time we have had her and we are on the way to having her well trained. She is no longer submissive to humans except her best friends and us, she will give most men a chance except very big ones, she has reasonable social skills with other dogs and will show warning behaviour rather than outright agression. She can sit, lie down, wait, come here and roll over, most of which she does pretty well, except if there is a squirrel about!
She is finding all the fireworks tonight absolutely terrifying. We have a pheremone diffuser which has been easing things up until tonight but we live by a park and it been pretty much non stop for the last 3 hours, with no signs of letting up. She is currently cowering in the bathroom panting away like crazy, eyes like saucers. Its heartbreaking. Does anyone have any opinions on the use of diazepam for dogs or know of any other therapies we might use. We are thinking of hiking out into the hills and camping away from it all next year, but November in Scotland is not the best month for this!
Nice to meet you all, looking forward to getting some expert advice.

Poor Girl!! She's had a rough start! Glad she's come along so beautifully in her loving home
You can post questions in the general section.
If she's that bad you can give her Diazepam - discuss it with your vets. You can also try desensitising her - you can buy a cd with firework noises. You start out playing it very softly and steadily increase the volume, your neighbours might not love you, but it does work!

Hi and welcome and well done on rescuing Babe. She is obviously petrified so I would speak to the vets about the diazepam and maybe work on the CD as Oxide suggests. I would do it very slowly and regularly as the fireweorks will be back for Xmas

Re: Hi from Babe, Kerrin and Becca.
Hi and welcome. Sounds like you've done a great job with Babe, I bet it was hard work but now its paid off and it must be really rewarding to see the differnce you've made in her.
I tried all sorts of herbal stuff with Cassie as she's terrified of fireworks too, she just has to hear a single one in the distance and she's completely stressed. Last year the vet gave her diazepam 10mg and I have to say it has really, really helped. My other dog, an ebt which I've just had to have put to sleep was completely unbothered by them and all the other dogs I've had haven't been scared of them either so I was shocked at how bad she reacted. The diazepam has a sedative effect and makes her a little woozy, like she's a bit 'drunk' almost, but I think it's better than her being so terrified amd stressed. They usually take a bout 30 mins to take effect.

Re: Hi from Babe, Kerrin and Becca.
Hi thanks for the warm welcome and all the advice ,thank god firework season seems to be over for another couple of months anyway .Think vallium is the way to go or we'll end up on them never mind babe. The wee girl is much better now and loving her walks and general staffieing around.
This forum has convinced me that staffies in all their different guses are definetley the most handsome/gorgeous dogs on the planet.
We think babe is crossed with an english bull or possibly a bat or seal pup depending what mood shes in. Any other suggestions? Will put up some more pictures of babe when i figure out how or beccas got time.
cheers kerrin
