buster comfort collar

Post by i love leah and lois on Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:20 pm

Im having milly spayed next month and i have been told she will have to wear the comfort collar.I know its so that she wont bite at the stiches. But it just doesnt seem fair her having to wear this until her stiches have fallen out,How would my poor little girl sleep with that around her neck and what about feeding times. She will be running around banging in to everything.Ive just rang the vets to ask if we can leave it off when we are at home and just put it on her when nobody is at home.she said it would be fine as long as we are keeping a close eye on her.

Hopefully she won't be bothered too much with the stitches. My girl did'nt bother in the least with hers.

Good luck

I used to work in a vets and the advice we gave was if she was distracted ie on a walk then leave it off. It can also be left off if you are in the room with her, and able to keep an eye on her should she try and get at the stitches so you can distract her to stop her.

If you have to leave her for any length of time, especially over night she will need to wear it. It won't be as comfortable for her to sleep but will be better for her to wear it than have to go back to the vets to be re-stitched.

Some dogs won't bother with their stitches and some will do everything they can to get at them, so just keep an eye on her and see what she is like. It might be a case she doesn't have to wear it much, or it may be a case she will have it on constantly until they are taken out.

It depends what stitches they use in your vets. They normally tend to use disolable stitches on castrated dogs and non-disolvable on bitch spays.

They do this so that the bitch can be checked over 10 days post operatively to make sure there are no problems and she has healed nicely.

hopefully she will leave the stitches alone...

Jethro had a big operation last year and had stitches all over him as he had quite a few lumps and bumps cut out. They put a cone on him when we picked him up from the vets..but he was going bonkers with it on. It was upsetting him more than the stitches. We took it off him and he was such a good boy.. never saw him at his stitches once.
