recall/come command

my 14 month old staff has started to ignore the come command wen she is out in the garden if im upstairs and i say her name and the come command she comes but out in the garden she is ignoring me can anyone help please new staffy member

I think she's possiably going through her 'I'm not going to be told what to do' stage! The gardens by far more fun than going indoors! Be patient and persistant, she sounds to pushing her boundries to me!

Souds alot like the rebellious teenage phase.

You have to be more interesting than what is around her, arm yourself with toys treats etc, go back to basic recall training, be consistant and you'll get there.

tried toys but she just jumps u and starts mouthing in the garden as well so dont know what to do as she is so loving she only jumps up and mouths in the garden i have tried to call her so i can put her on the chain tie until she calms down but she just runs around snapping at me she dont do it indoors or wen we r on walks bascily butter wouldnt melt in her mouth as she loves the fuss please can some one help many thanks for all your kind comments

Hi Jenny,
Spend a few minutes every day doing recall training in the garden, don't wait until she's running around all excited to try and do it as she probably won't listen! Get a recall training line/long line, its basically an extra long lead about 10 feet that you'll get for a few pound at any pet store. Put this on her before you go out in the garden with her so you have control over her when you go out. Have some food rewards with you, if you can use her kibble as food rewards do, if not use tiny pieces of a treat that she likes. In this case food rewards are probably better to use than toys as toys may just make her more excited and more likely to jump up and mouth you. Start off by just giving her a couple of feet on the lead, call her name to get her attention, sound nice and happy, as soon as she starts moving towards give your 'come' cue and reward her when she comes back to you (but make sure she's not jumping up to get the reward, get her to sit first). As she gets better you can gradually give her more of the lead and eventually leave it off her altogether when doing the training in the garden. For the jumping up and mouthing, the minute she starts to do this just turn your back on her, don't say anything to her or try and push her off, completely ignore her and go inside for a few seconds if you have to, by doing this she learns that jumping up makes you go away, which I'm sure she doesn't want!, so this should help lessen the behaviour. at the moment she is coming to me when i offer her a biscuit so not sure if i can use it but it seems to work as today she has been coming when i call her as for jumping up and mouthing i do turn around but she jumps down and then jumps up my back and tries mouthing but what i got is a spike that u stick in ground and a long chain as she mouthed me i placed her on it yesterday and i dont think she liked it as i ignored her. today she was ok in the garden so fingers crossed that should help like i said fingers crossed if not then i dont know what else to try will keep u posted tomorrow on what she like love my misty moo xx

Sounds like you're getting there with her! Yeah a lot of the time dogs that jump up on you will keep jumping up at your back even if you turn your back and try & ignore them.
Another good exercise, same idea as the other one really, that you can do (if you have someone that you can rope in to help!) is - put misty on a lead, have the other person hold her on the lead, you approach her, as soon as she tries to jump up at you turn & walk away, the other person must stand where they are and not move with her if she jumps, repeat until she doesn't jump when you approach her and sits instead, and when she sits instead of jumping she gets attention/hugs/treats etc don't ask her to sit, let her figure out what she needs to do to get attention from you, and she will ! Dogs learn fairly quickly what works for them and what doesnt, so if jumping up doesnt get her anything after a while she'll try something else which will be not jumping and eventually sitting!. And make sure anyone that visits/meets her on walks does the same, all it takes is one person to let her jump up on them for it to keep her doing it!

thank u sab44 for the advice hun i will try that some times im on my own so i will tie her up in gargen and wen i walk towards her and she jumps up and i walk away she mite learn not to jump will that be ok to do many thanks for your time and help

Teathering should be fine for very short periods and as long as you don't put them on there out of anger or as a punishment other whys you are going to have one frustrated dog which can be worse than a jumping and nipper.

yes do be careful about tethering her as miss rogue says, also if she's really jumping & pulling against something thats stuck hard into the ground she could damage her neck.
You can do the jumping up exercise in a slightly different way that you dont need someone else there - put Misty into one room and you stand outside, open the door and walk in, the second she jumps up just leave without saying anything to her, keep repeating and same as if she was on the lead and someone holding her she'll learn the jumping makes you go away so she'll trying something else like sitting, then when she does sit make a big fuss of her

that i gd idea apart from she dont jump up at me in doors as she follows me every were unles i start to leave her in a room and shut the door and see wat happens

ya that wat she is doing at times but then wen i call her again she comes so it is starting to go ok and she hopefully wont be long before she is coming to me all the time wen i call her. i would just like to thank u all for your kind words and helping other staffy owners like myself with your advice xx
