"Fun" dog show at the village fete
Oh boy!!! we went along last Saturday to support the village fete and took Polly with us for a bit of socialisation with all the different noises and people etc, and we got talked into entering her into the "Fun" dog show.
I had thought it would be local people all up for a bit of a giggle, some were but some of the people there were breeders and people who show their dogs all over the country, and lots had come from miles away. I have never seen so much back combing and fussing of dogs ever
Polly had been over the fen that morning for her walk and had been digging rabbit holes and in the gorse bushes so was a bit dusty in places
We did get some "down the nose" looks
I have never never done any ring craft or trained Polly to walk with her head up or anything so stood feeling a total plonker while some very posh and very well trained pups were paraded around the ring properly
My baby girl was a total star though when her turn came, she walked around and only got distracted a few times, although I let her sit down when we were watching the others have their turn, I didn't hold her tail out or make her pose and she stood and let the judge check her teeth, ears coat and feel her all over without a fuss, she even gave the judge a kiss on the chin
It was no surprise when they announced that 1st place went to a pyranean (sp) mountain dog pup and 2nd and 3rd places went to a couple of andrex puppie look alikes and so I was really surprised when Polly got 4th place
much to the dissapointment of a very pretty little king charles cavalier pups owner. We did feel sorry for the "Champion" pups though cos afterwards they were put into cages while their owners watched the rest of the dog show. Polly on the other hand was playing with a lovely little JR pup in the field and having a lovely time

Sounds like some very serious business for a fun dog show! But what an achievement to come 4th without even trying!

Re: "Fun" dog show at the village fete
We went to something similar recently and we entered harvey thinking it was a bit of fun and raising money for charity and what not, but nooo... there were a couple of people like us doing it for fun but there were alot of people who did this properly and showed dogs all over the country.
Anyhoos harvey behaved brilliantly like normal, however when the judge came round to see him i got asked the same q's like everyone, what breed, name, age etc and as soon as i mentioned staffy i got a filthy look she rolled her eyes and VERY quickly checked his eyes and ears, never went near the teeth lol and in the end surprise surprise, me and harvey came last! The little fluffy, FRIENDLY dogs as she put it won the top places.
Meh oh well.

Re: "Fun" dog show at the village fete
I know what you mean Ella, I was really surprised we got a placing, the judge for the puppy class was a lady who breeds and shows whippets and was very proper, but she wasn't a bit worried about opening Polly's mouth to look at her teeth and gave us a big grin when Polly licked her. I thought the Pyranean mountain dog would win it was a huge walking fluffy rug of a dog, and obviously ringcraft trained and the lab pups are everyones favourites usually too, I was really surprised the King charles pup didn't get anywhere though he was so pretty, the JR pup was a darling too, there were a couple of other pups but I forget what they were.
Some people took the whole thing far too seriously, it did spoil it a bit for us.

Yer it did spoil it for us, i was never expecting him to win anything, but it was the way we were treated by the judge that really annoyed me, she was quite happy to look at ALL the other dogs teeth but no not harvey.
But anyhoos well done to polly for getting 4th though

Not much of a judge if she did that.

Whoop! Well done Polly
I've never been to any dog show myself, but if it was a bit of fun it probably would have annoyed me to if everyone was being deadly serious about it all. I hate all the breed stereo types as well, especially about Staffs but my dads German Shepherd used to get a lot of stick because he was huge but he was soft as muck and loved children!

Re: "Fun" dog show at the village fete
Aww thats great well done Polly. Though they are meant to be fun dog shows many breeders will use these as 'practices' for their pups who are under 6months to give them a go in the ring!
Re: "Fun" dog show at the village fete
HI Nikki, We would love to head over to Gedney to say hi to you and bring Polly to say hi to Mazda and Zero if they are with you.
Just let us know how we will know you lol I'll be the over weight woman with the demented brindle Staffie pup who will be in a red harness
