pet insurance - Insurance Empty Insurance

Post by Tonyx89 Sun Aug 31 2014, 23:07

I am looking into getting insurance for my pup but I've never had to get insurance for anything. What should I be looking for and does everyone use a certain insurer that is good?
Thank you in advance if you can help

Insurance is crucial. I cannot begin to tell you how important it is, I messed up and have been over 5k down because I didn't sort it out.

There is a good thread about it somewhere but I can't quiet find it just now. Will look tomorrow and post it here for you if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Thank you really appreciated. I don't want to get into the situation you had yourself in either. Feel useless as I've never got insurance

I'm no expert but I'd check the small print about payouts per condition. Some policies limit the payout for one condition to a single year, so say your dog gets ill and needs £2K of medication per year for the rest of its life your insurance will only pay out the first £2K. This is OK for things like a broken leg but not for long-term ailments.

Personally I went for LV Premier Insurance and it costs me £212 a year, which seems OK. This offers £5K per condition per year and payouts for a number of other eventualities. LV seemed to have the best reviews on the web although I can't vouch for them as (happily) I've not yet claimed.

Also, make sure your insurance has third party liability. These days, when people sue at the drop of a hat, it's very important. If your dog bites someone or causes an accident you can find yourself hit with a million quid lawsuit which will stuff you if you're not insured. I think my policy includes £2m coverage and although I'm pretty certain I'll never use it it's good to have it.

We have Rocky insured as a Staffy cross which he is, on a lifetime policy with More Than that costs about £18 per month. We have not claimed from them for anything yet (we took out this policy earlier this year) so cannot say how good they are yet.

Previously we he was insured with Argos on a lfetime policy which cost about the same for the first year. We made a claim with Argos last year for which they paid out very quickly (within a week of them receiving the claim form). At renewal time earlier this year they wanted to up the premiums to about £25 per month which is why we went elsewhere.

It pays to shop around and get the best deal, please make sure you get lifetime cover though.

Definitely get lifetime cover! We are with Argos at the moment at about £18 per month and have claimed quite a bit so far, so we are waiting to see if the cost goes up when renewal comes around.

We made sure we read through all of the documents that came with it to check that it covers everything it should for a decent amount too.

Most policies don't include dental work, so keep that in mind and also regular things like any special dietary food, worming tablets etc.

We are with AXA and echo the above posts, Re: dental most will only consider injury i.e. broken tooth and one condition is that the dog has to have an annual check up at the vet
