Am staffs in uk

I realize there's a dedicated page for american staffys but doesn't look like much goes on on there so posted on here very much doubt anybodys going to care  my questions is are am staffs legal in the uk ? theres websites selling them saying there completely legal ive read online there legal and also read there illegal because they are a pit type what are people views ? and can you back up what you say with a website or something because were having a debate on a facebook page and nobody really has a clue haha

Americans are legal in the uk my friend used to own one, only pits are illegal (which is a shame lovely breed) x

american bulldogs are legal but am staffs come under pit bull type so not legal  

I think you're both confusing them with American Bullies. Amstaffs are basically the AKC registered version of the pit bull - a pit bull set to a standard so that it can be an official breed. They're illegal in the UK.

Actually just the UK. As far as I'm aware, the breed is legal in the Republic of Ireland.

Depends if the measure up to type or not. The law in this country is a pain in *. You can have an amstaff that doesnt measure up as pitbull type live here quite happily yet a staff cross lab that fits it perfectly and is condemned to death. This is my boys great great uncle an imported amstaff that didnt measure up

So basically from what i can gather there not illegal to own or sell seeing as there are people selling them but they are illegal if they fit the "pitbull type" categorie which sounds really vague and lacking anyway

They are illegal to own and sell, but it's often difficult to determine whether or not a dog is actually an Amstaff, particularly if it looks like a staffy cross. For this reason, some do go unnoticed in the UK.

people wont be selling real american staffordshire terrier becasue they are banned they are selling cross breeds using the name to get more money for their crossbreeds, when the pitbull ban come in there was only 2 male american staffordshire terrier in the uk...

You do get the odd person who managed to smuggle in an Amstaff or forge papers. They're few and far between though, and usually only those in their inner circle know about it. Like Steve said, almost all of them are cross breeds.

very unlike anybody would smuggle an amstaf into the country if anybody who smuggle in an dog into the uk it be an pitbulls for the fighting ring not for pets

Somebody was busted for it a while ago. He travelled across from America and brought his dogs with him.

I don't know the details. All I know is that he got caught out because somebody reported them as pit types, but it turns out he was an Amstaff breeder or something.

Either way, he was an idiot and was willing to risk his dogs' lives over money.

A lot of them will look like pit bulls, but they're likely just to be staffy cross-breeds - even the ones advertised as pits bulls!

becasue it look like one doesn't mean it is one i could crossbreed an number of breeds to get an dog that look like asn pitbull but that doesn't mean it's one and people who naming their mongrels pitbulls are stupid that doesn't have a clue about dog breeds.

I know a distant neighbour with one and he's a lovely dog but got attacked by a Collie and when she complained to the police about it they just laughed at her, she only walks him at night now because it knocked her confidence and this other idiot walks around with his dog off the lead everywhere and i mean everywhere.
