Weight pull? Empty Weight pull?

Post by JessAndLottie Tue Apr 12 2011, 17:26

I was wondering if people with experience in weight pull could give me some info about getting into it. I think it would be really good for Lottie's social development and an outlet for her energy. I've read they have to do 6 months training in advance, although Lottie is already trained to walk/run on a treadmill, carries a backpack and walks nicely on head collar and pulls on harness. So theres a bit of training lol.
Thanks in advance!

Blue has just started to go to obedience classes, which is held in an indoor area. I know they do agility, Gun dog classes & Schutzhund training. They may even do weight pulling. I would ask around these sort of places in your own area first to see if anyone does it.
Good luck I hope you find somewhere

I think weight pull would be great for her! Here's the link for the International Weight Pull Association, I'm sure they'll have tons of information on how to get started! And when you do, be sure to post pictures!

Not sure about weight pull but part of my training for competitions were my son used to roller blade with them they loved it and thats the key they have to enjoy. A good harness is essential and roller blading is a good way to learn the dog to pull with speed then you slowly introduce weight and slow down the dog encouraging the pull from the front so get your skates on and have a great time Smile

Me? With skates on? Dream on! Laughing I keep my feet firmly on the ground!

I know people enjoy it, and I'm sure it's great for the dogs, but it just doesn't interest me. Anyway, Dempsey's such a lazy sod I think he'd either just stand there and give me a filthy look, or turn around & eat the harness!

I have never thought of weight pulling but the skate thing sounds like it could be great fun plus gives Ty a bit more exercise and fun. I am going to have to invest in a pair of skates for the summer if I end up in hospital though I am blaming you and your son lol.

Thanks for the link, I will check up on that! I am probably going to try to get Lottie into local obedience too.

My main reason for finding interest in weight pull is the concept of 'breed energy' and having an outlet for it, ya know like labs retrieve, collies herd, terriers dig. Obviously I don't want Lottie follow through with her breed so I thought weight pull would be a chance to use her raw brute strength in a constructive way. Rollerblading is a good idea, I shall have to go get some, since I lost mine!

I've always thought weigh pull was a great way to get bully breeds' energy out. They are already so good at pulling! You could also try having her pull a cart or something to start out. Skates would be interesting (and probably fun with the right dog!), not sure if I'd want to risk my limbs with Saxon pulling me!!

In Holland they have something called DSA (Dutch Stafford Athletes). Weight pull is one of the disciplines that they train in, along with 9 more. Google it the dogs are amazing. I personally love the idea of training my dog until its in peak condition, I think its something my older staff Skibadee would be brilliant at. They just dont do much of it in the UK. Think there might be one or two weight pull comps a year.

That would be great! I know questions are often asked about weight pulling and its something I would be interested in myself. A sort of step-by-step guide with photos would make a brilliant thread, then we could pin it as a sticky!
