Thumbsdown Himalayan Dog Chew - UPDATE

Post by jojobda on Sat Aug 03 2013, 18:57

Hey Guys,

So my inlaws are visiting and have asked what treats for marley they could bring from the USA, she goes through a 12" bully stick in 30 mins and has 3/4 to 1/2 an elk antler left, so i asked them to bring me a Himalayan Dog Chew. She is currently working on it as we speak. i keep hearing snap and pop sounds as she gnaws on it. It seems to break off in small pieces..... is that how it should be?

Is this what you mean:

Himalayan Dog Chew - UPDATE B5D446A015175E012D029781C35DD06FM

I think they are made from yak and cows milk and all natural product and no chemicals or preservatives. Should be OK.

As above not heard of them but from looking seems a US product that is very rare in the UK , daresay they will make it over here eventually.

Apparently ( and I guess the clue is in the name ) they come from an ancient Nepalese recipe

One treat these lucky Himalayan canines may be enjoying during their festival is a chew made of dried Yak or cows milk.  It comes from an ancient recipe but until very recently unless you were traveling to the Himalayas your hound couldn't get his paws on it.   However, thanks to the expanding global market the treats are now available from a number of retailers including our favorite, Olive Green Dog.
The treats are really long lasting (Dr. Z has been working on hers for over a week) and they are made with all natural ingredients, and no chemicals or preservatives.  They also have a shelf life of at least four years.  We love them!

hey guys. an update. DONT GIVE TO YOUR STAFFS. I gave it to marley thinking it would last longer. it does last longer. its incredibly dense. i was not concerned until i started hearing snapping or popping sounds. she was breaking it off in chunks. so i took it away from here. 24 hours later, my wife, marley and I have just come from an emergency vet visit. i actually threatened the vet, because the last time we placed several emergency calls in april, no one ever called us back and we were forced to wait until regular hours. but back to the chew, we went out to do a poo in the yard and she screamed and howled in pain as she tried to pass a bowel movement, nothing came out. thats when we called and went straight to the vet, i knew it was a blockage somehow and knew we needed to go right away. poor girl. i have never heard her make any noise other than her play bark and growl. the vet gave her enimas and meds. checked for further blockages, it was just blocked pretty badly at the end of the tunnel. had it removed and she was back to smiling.

he said it was a good thing that i came in right away as it was a full blockage and could have been disastrous and much more expensive.

I hope my experience will help someone else not to make the same mistake i made. broke my heart to see my girl in such sudden pain.

Thanks for that, it might be a good idea to contact the suppliers of these bars to let them know what has happened to your dog. See if the vet will do a letter for you and send a copy to the supplier too.
