Hi
does anybody know anything about seasonal alopecia in Staffies? My dog has it and she gets bald patches on her sides about twice a year. The vet said it is common and there is nothing she can give for it. It's something to do with the lack of sunlight in the winter months. I was wondering if anybody knew of anything that can be done. confused

I've heard of several types of hair loss, but I have to admit that I haven't heard of seasonal hair loss.

What sort of food is she on, and do you give her any supplements?

she has harringtons dry with some butchers mixed in just for taste. Apparently seasonal alopecia is common in short haired breeds- staffies, boxers etc. I've never seen it.

Melatonin supplements may help. You can also try light therapy, which involves exposing your dog to artificial light for a few hours each day in the winter months. It would need to be a high intensity bulb, though, to compensate for natural daylight. I recommend talking to your vet about it.

However, seasonal alopecia does not actually harm or irritate the dog. Many say that it is actually more uncomfortable for the owners, as they don't like seeing bald patches! Smile

Yes melatonin supplements, our vet thought daisy had this before it turned out to be demodex! You can buy it on the Internet.
