Staffies V cats ???

Post by Jools1971 on Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:35 pm

Hi, myself and partner are both experienced dog ownwers !! At the moment we have a Lancashire Healer and 2 X-breeds, one of which does contain staffy !! We are strongly considering adopting a staff puppy bitch we have seen, after looking for one !!! Our main concern after reading up on Staffies, wud be for our six cats !!!
We have a dog cage, which we usually only use when one of the animals has perhaps had to have an operation, or is sick !! Which if need be cud be used by a staffy !!! I personally don't like to use cages, but.....................
Any advice or suggestions wud be welcome XXX

Hi & welcome to the forum!

My old boy Bandit lived quite happily with 3 cats. DEmpsey, my current bully hates them, though!

There's nothing wrong with crate training a dog, but it won't solve any problems with cats. The best thing to do is to introduce them carefully & maybe put up a couple of baby gates so the cat can get away when it needs some peace!

My boy is fine with my mums cats. The cats hiss at him, And he just lays there and ignores them. I think staffs in general can be good with cats with the right training. But you have to remember there are always exceptions! Theres no way to know for sure until you try really.

If its possible, before buying her, maybe try putting her with a cat and see how she acts? Might give you some indication as to how she will act around cats.
