At what age? Empty At what age?

I'm just sat here thinking (dangerous I know), at what age do you?/can you? Stop feeding the 'puppy' food and start feeding the 'adult' food? And what's the difference etc?

Just asking out of curiosity Smile

Personally I stopped at 6 months , mainly because Tommy would steal Tillyt's food anyway and I was happy I was feeding a quality food . Think the Wainwrights puppy we were on was good to 12 months , so if you don't have outside influences like me then stick with it, there are additional proteins in most puppy food but at 6 months I wasn't going to worry.

What food do you feed now ?? what is the guidance from the manufacturer

I think in most brands the only difference is the protein content.

Yes, The protein content is higher in puppy food, and sometimes the size of kibble is smaller.

I would hazzard a guess that you can change any time from about 6 months, although some foods actually say you can keep giving puppy food until about 18 months!

I personally do not believe puppy food is needed at all, it's a marketing gimmick.

Pups are totally fine to go straight onto adult food once weaned.

The puppy food manufacturers advocate feeding their puppy food up to 24 months of age (give or take a few months, depending)

Well, they would, wouldn't they ... "kerChing"

Most people I know of, breeders and experienced dog owners, have gradually switched over to adult food at about 6 - 8 months of age. The theory being that "in the wild" puppies will at this age be eating adult food and no longer need the extra nutriments in puppy food that may lead to over-development.

He's eating wainwrights puppy at the moment, guidelines say till 12 months, I've no problems with the food etc, I was just wondering if it really needed to be at 12 months or if the puppy food market was a bit of a gimmick so to speak.

Thanks everyone for your answers, it's so good to be able to get this kind of info and feedback Smile

Its up to you really , like I said I had other reasons because Tommy is a greedy guts , no need for you to change at the moment unless you are unhappy with the results

i stopped at around 7 months, she was getting her puppy food in the mornings but was big enough to steal the big dogs food and eat it without choking so they started being fed together / staying together all day
