Be interested to see others answers as I've started a new job and my dog sitter/mum is going to have to cut the time she spends with her.

Less than two hours, generally. Very occasionally it might be three hours, but not often. But then I'm lucky - I can take Dempsey to work with me.

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
Now that I'm back at uni, on a Tuesday, I will be leaving the house at 8.30, coming back to walk and feed and play with Charlie about 11.30 after my lecture. I'll have to leave again at about 1 for a seminar, then my sister will be here about about 3 to pick up my kids. On a Friday, I'll be leaving at 9, back at about 11.30 again, then I'll be leaving again at 1 and my sister will be here again at about 3. So even though I've put 4-6 hours on the poll, it's less than that - didn't think it through properly!!

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
Well technically she wont be left at all while i work as my salon is in the front section of my house... BUT she will be in her crate on and off during the day while i do clients. I am lucky that i can left her out every hour or so and have a wee and a play and then go onto the next client.
most cant wait to see her and they want her to sit in the salon... that wont be happening lol

He doesnt mind going in his crate he just sleeps or chews on his kong. I do feel mean though when I have to leave him at 8 bacause I dont see him again till about 5ish good job I have my mother and the o/h to keep him entertained while I am at work.

I don't work as such so I'm the dog man around the farm and look after them all when everyone else is a t work... I am dog sitting this coming week end for someone...their dog doesn't generally like men but gets on great with me it's also very lucrative....
Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
Im very lucky that I have work days at home and do work silly times as does my hubby and son so the dogs are rarely left on there own, when im pottering about with the horses they can be with me or choose the indoors its up to them

Less than 2 normally. I live in a madhouse and there is always people coming and going. But left him longer over xmas and new year when we all went out partying and he was as good as gold.

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
Our boy comes with us everywhere and is never left alone. If we go into the 'garden' (read 4 acres...) he stays at the house, but we are on the property and he can come with us if he wants (he just wants to stay and guard his 'property'). Whenever we go to town, to the city, go ANYWHERE he is with us or our daughters (if we go interstate) so he never gets left on his own.

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
sorry to uproot an old thread... a lot of people on here say their dog goes into "the crate" for a while and then comes out when they get home or what ever.... forgive me if I'm being naive, what exactly are these crates? are they cages where the dog sleeps? my dog is in the yard when I go out? are these people who live in apartments who have the crates? I'm not judging, just interested.
back to the topic at hand:
I am a relief teacher and also work at a before and after school care job, so sometimes (maybe once or twice a week) i may have to leave my boy for 8 hours in the yard... I always make sure he has his treat ball and an assortment of toys to play with and sometimes a bone, but i hate leaving him alone! if im working at a school close by I'll drop home to see him at lunch!

I wouldn't leave a puppy alone in a yard, to be honest - just my own personal opinion & not criticizing you. Here in the UK the weather wouldn't be good enough for that & there are too many things a pup can injure itself on. For dogs like mine (a serial chewer as a pup and young dog) crates are a godsend!

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
fair enough.
we dont give him free run of the entire yard, theres a sectioned off area under the veranda that is about 2m X 5m where he is free to roam with his kennel and other bed and toys, he's not big enough to be in the whole yard yet because our fences have wider gaps than his shoulders at the moment! wont take long though before he can't squeeze through anymore!

The longest we've left her was 4 hours but normally it's around 2 or so.

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
Gus and Kelly are usually alone less than 2 hours,if not at all. Sometimes 3 hours on certain occasions.
With Maybel now, everyone is usually home so we can spend time with her, train her etc.

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
We have now had two dogs that sleep crated, around 11pm they start to get ready for bed , first wanting a wee then running into the crate for the last biscuit of the day...during the day the crate is shut and not used instead she has a dog bed ...for us this works well we know she aint padding round the house, she only objected once and not sure what set her off, but since them we all have a good nights sleep
Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
cant vote on this cos our dogs are never left alone unless you count night time while we're asleep
left lemmy once for 20 minutes between me leaving and pete arriving home and the skirting board no needs to be replaced. untill he stops things like this when we turn our backs i am not leaving him. imagine him teaching lottie this bad habit jes i would have no house left

Re: How Many Hours A Day Is Your Dog Left Alone?
i clicked less than 2 as my oh is there most of the day,but if we go out at the weekend she is left for longer, she is very good and has never wrecked anything, the back door is open when were out for the day also,i have tidy fences between neighbours and our house ,also theres no back gate as we have to go through garage to get out.when we come back theres always a warm spot on the couch where she has been sleeping, bless her.
