Re: Herman
vet said helping Herman's health would take a long time and his behavioral issues ruled out foster options. vet even offered to help look into foster care, but found no one willing to take Herman. obviously the choice was mine alone. Herman' suffering is over. Mine has just begun.

Re: Herman
me too janey. Herman's health had deteriorated faster than the vet ever thought. treatment was possible, but not in Herman's best interest. "all dogs go to heaven" is more than a trite saying, i firmly believe it's reality. i don't take life for granted, so i didn't assume Herman would go before i did. i'll always miss my lil' guy. my only consolation is knowing that when i get there, he'll be there waiting for me.janey wrote:

Re: Herman
vet took one look at Herman and reacted with great saddness. Herman had skin infection, which could be treated. neurological problems were evident and that was hard, if not impossible to cure. vet said he could deal with the surface stuff to some degree. the deeper issues were another story. the treatment required to lessen the allergy and skin issues was a long, drawn out process. with Herman's health re homing him was not an option. came down to taking Herman home to suffer a little longer or humanely releasing him from what he was going through. in the end, we all agreed that letting him go was the kindest thing to do.

Re: Herman
But Matt, I don't understand - if he could be cured, no matter how long it took, why would you choose to have him pts? I'm not trying to add to your pain or make you feel guilty, I'm just trying to understand.

Re: Herman
Herman's more serious issues were not "curable". the surface stuff could be treated to lessen the severity, but Herman's long term prognosis was the bottom line. options were discussed, including chiropractic treatment. vet said Herman could be at that indefinitly with little benefit. medication could possibly ease the discomfort somewhat, but didn't solve the problems. i could've brought Herman home, and let him suffer. i chose instead to do the compassionate thing and let Herman go. the void it created is hard to put into words. it's painful for me, but it was the kindest thing i could do for him.shontelle wrote:But Matt, I don't understand - if he could be cured, no matter how long it took, why would you choose to have him pts? Re: Herman
Herman's biggest issues were neurological. it's when, not if, Herman's body would give out. i chose to stop it now. watching him suffer was tearing me apart.

Ok, this is a memorial thread so let's treat it as such. We may not understand, but it wasn't our decision to make. Matt's explained why he made the decision and I think we shoulld leave it there.

Re: Herman
thanks Steve. i was with Herman when he took his last breath. i stayed for a while after, holding him tight, kissing him while i sobbed. i tried to work today, but i couldn't stop crying. Herman's popular where i work,. and will be remebered fondly by many for a long time to come.
