TANK Who Was Mistaken As a Pitbull in the Past Says "HELLO!" as a Staffordshire Bull for the First Time

Hello, my dog's name is TANK, he is 2 1/2 years old born on February 14 (Valentine's Day) and he is blue. I just recently discovered through research that my dog that my brother brought home 2 years ago was actually not an "American Pitbull Terrier" but rather "Staffordshire Bull Terrier". I am not sure if he was misinformed or if he had misheard his friend that gave him Tank who breeds pitbulls/and staffys?. My brother is still in denial that he is not pitbull but I am trying to convince him that he is something better (In my opinion). I always questioned why he looked so much more handsome/different than other "pitbulls" (In my opinion) and now I know why! I just though that I would join this forum to learn more about this breed-- for the longest time I was researching information about "pitbulls" when training him in the past which had worked well too but it seems more correct to seek help from Staffy Bull Owners for future reference. Tank is one of the most sweetest dogs I have ever owned. I am excited to learn more about this breed and see other beautiful Staffys just like TANK!

Training them wouldn't be much difference. Welcome! I assume you like Staffies more, but really they are both excellent breeds and most often misunderstood as the media makes them out to be beasts. Glad you are giving him a good loving home. Out of curiosity, what made you realize Tank is a SBT and not an APBT?

Recently I had a friend that was interested in buying a dog that looked like Tank and she questioned whether or not he was an American Pitbull Terrier or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I told her that he was an APBT because that was what my older brother told me when I got him as a puppy---but then I googled image what a Staffy was out of curiosity and the Wikipedia image looked JUST LIKE TANK with a round face and the Wikipedia page for the American Pitbull Terrier looked way different and then I just started googling staffy images and noticed the resemblances to Tank. It explained so much as to why he didn't look like APBTs. Wikipedia also mentioned how Staffy bulls get mistaken for Pitbulls sometimes. I then asked my brother one more time what exactly the breeder/his friend said to him and he said that the breeder told him that if people ask what Tank was to just say that he was a "Staffy Bull" I guess he mistook that as an Blue Nose Pitbull.

lol. Most people honestly don't know a thing about Pitbulls as it is. I used to get people wondering if my bulldog was a pit as well. Now everyone (not literally) tells me how my "pitbull puppy" is going to be huge. I tell them that my puppy is almost two and most likely will not grow up to be all than much bigger. Sometimes I don't care enough to explain he is a SBT and not a Pit. Tank could be any mixture of things or a pedigree SBT. Doesn't really matter if ya love him like you obviously do. Do you have papers? I can see people thinking he is a pit though because of the ears. Don't know anybody who does that with SBTs as they are much rarer in our part of the country than pits and attract a different sort of owner (speaking of pedigree AKC registered dogs).

Too me he dosn't look staffy or like an american pit bull terrier He looks like an american bully too me.

Lovely dog, not sure if I agree he is a staffie but he is goregeous either way and clearly loved.

I'm with Janey on this one though, I don't like the ears cropped either, just a personal opinion.

It's those short pointy ears that pit bulls have that may have given people the impression that Tank may be a pit bull.

Hi and welocme. if that is Tank in profile in your avatar then my vote is that he probably is mostly Staff. His broader face and his sweet nature is all Staff. He looks great. (Not keen on the ear thing either but seems to be popular with Pit owners in US)

Thank God it is becoming less popular here to crop ears as people did for dog fighting at first I believe and now people don't want to be associated with that at all. I never have understood that or pinning ears for that matter. Sorry to keep banging on the ear thing. Not the dogs fault and they don't know it makes them look rough.

He is gorgous and he definately looks staffy to me. He could possibly be an American Bully - but then I think they were developed by crossing APBT's with staffords anyway.

I should get a photo of my staffy along side my friends pit bull when I get a chance - they are completely different when you see them side by side. Max is way taller, bigger and leaner in comparsin to my staffy who is much smaller, shorter, stockier and has a much bigger wider head.

Love the blue colour, I'm not a fan of ear cropping at all - thank god it is banned here - although I do admit I have always liked the look on some breeds. A lot of people have thought my staffy is a pit bull too - theres just so many people out there that don't know the difference!

In your avatar he looks more staffy than in the pic to me, and in the pic he looks more bully than APBT !!

Tank is a lovely dog and in our opinion we would say he has defo got some sort of APBT in him as he seems to be a little big to be pure staff i could be wrong. ANYWAY amazing dog he is absolutely stunning

I just had a look on the AKC breed standard for staffies which could be of some help determining whether he is a staff or not.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers should be the following:
Height at shoulder: 14 to 16 inches.
Weight: Dogs, 28 to 38 pounds;
bitches, 24 to 34 pounds

Staffies are generally much smaller than pit bulls so if he is alot bigger then he may be an american bully or have pit in him. Having said that he still looks staffy to me

I've seen many Am Staff photos where the ears are "cropped" and I just don't get it.
I spent a lot of time with APBT owners when I lived in Cairns (far north Queensland) and fortunately none of their dogs had their ears cropped - thankfully for me

He looks a sweetheart thats all that matters and if you have no pedigree papers from a reputable breeder then its guess work but the ears are essential to balance the head for a staffy he looks a bit bully because of this im sorry but its not a attractive look
