Training to stand
Hi, can anyone advise me of the best technique to train Jake to just stand? I can get him sit and lie down no problem!
I need him to learn this so I can get some good poses for the camera!
Cheers,Kev.

Re: Training to stand
When I taught Inca to stand we started from a sitting position and then it was as simple as leading her forwards with a treat in my hand. As soon as she began the stand movement I would say the command.
Once this seemed to kick in, I also did it starting from a drop position, and also just while she was walking along.
I found the timing to be crucial as often when she stood, if I left it too long she would just sit back down again
Got to get in quick with the treat and a "Good Stand" - while she was still standing.
This is just really basic, I'm sure the pro's can help more if you want that sexy stance to happen.

Re: Training to stand
and if that didnt work ,at puppy classes we were told to put our hand under the tummy and just gently push up so they naturally stand but you have to say stand as they do it ..and treat if neccessary..

Re: Training to stand
I also used Miso's method except as I say "stand" & moved the treat in an upward circular motion to simulate the hand signal for "Stand" & at the same time with my hand on their thigh gently encourage the dog into the stand possy. Good luck, it's a fab feeling the first time they do it all on their own.

Re: Training to stand
Get him siting, on lead so you have control, treat at nose level. Slide your foot under his belly towards his tail, move the treat an inch forward (at the same time) and the moment he starts lifting his bum say stand and treat when he's up.

Excellent, thanks Oxide!
That sounds like a simple and effective method so i'll try that one first!
Thanks to everyone else for their ideas too!

Re: Training to stand
sorry for bumping an old post but I can offer a piece of advice that worked well for me...
In formal obedience training the intent is for sit, down and stand to have the front paws never move from their spot on the floor. I also had difficulty in luring my dog forward to get the stand as they usually just sit after a few steps.
What worked for me and I saw it on a video by the best trainer I have ever seen...
Have the dog in a sit. You are standing in front of them facing them. Have a treat in your hand, so they know you have the treat.
Then walk TOWARDS the dog... Right up into them... They should automatically stand in order to move backwards out of your way...
As soon as they stand (they should literally POP their back legs out behind them) YES (or click), and treat...
Do that a few times, then start saying STAND and walk toward them... Keep practicing...
Now my dog can stand from a sit even if he is at a heel next to me...
As for staying there... start off with just the stand, then vary the length of time they are standing for before you treat... 1 second, 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 1 second, 5 seconds... etc etc...
If he starts to move, then you are pushing too far too fast, go back to many many repetitions of 1 - 2 seconds... maybe for a few days even a week!!!
Practice stay in a sit or a down first as well... sit, stay, gooooood... take a step back then come back to dog and treat, then sit, stay, gooooood... take 2 steps back then come back and treat. Always go back to your dog to treat, otherwise he will start to think that he can break the stay if he THINKS he will get a treat... Eventually you will be able to walk a circle around the dog while he is in a stay... then he will understand stay then it will be easier to stay in a stand too!!!!
Give it a shot!!! I guarantee if you follow this advice that it will work. Short training sessions 3-5 minutes, maybe 3-5 times a day for best results!!! Be consistent, and have fun!!!

Re: Training to stand
Hi
Some great tips and advice for you
I have also seen similar / same techniques used when training for showing.
Basicaly - they ask to stand from sit (using the treat from their nose and move away in straight line until they stand) then say STAND and praise give treat at exact point of saying STAND
To keep them there (takes more practice haha - I am just doing this)
Once they master STAND then say (whilst stood) STILL and give 5 secs then praise and reward increase the command STILL to say 20 good secs
Once you have mastered STILL - then go and practice WAIT or STAY move away again increasing time they WAIT
At this point you should be able to take good STAND pics -
I have started this today - so will let you know how I also get on - proabably NEXT Christmas haha
Good Luck xx
