so am i lucky or is he just playing me? ? ?

hi quick question buddy is coming up to 17 weeks old we got him seven weeks ago and have taught him the usual sit stay down bed come no etc etc but this week we took him to a local wood where we know there are not that many dogs around we had busta with us our jrt and know whereever he is buddy is to so i let him off at the ready to run after him busta ran off exploring but buddy kept stopping to check i was still behind him i called buddy come and he came straight back and continued doing everytime i called even when busta went to introduce himself to two collies...am i just luckily or is it because we have such a good bond? perhaps he is just really clever or even just tricking me into thinking his a good boy i dunno but am thinking maybe some agility training when he gets a bit bgger he seems to enjoy being taught new things and really listens to what i say..what do you all think...

its quite common for pups to be cautious at the first time of freedom, when he builds his confidence it may be a different story lol, continue working on his recall and maybe join some classes that way you'll be all set for when he feels braver lol
as for agility, great idea but dont plan on doing anything with him on that front till hes 18 months

We had the same " luck" with Maizie. We wondered if it was because we had an older dog ( 8 years ) as all our dogs have in the past only had a year between them.

She is nine months now and still good with recall but have to admit not perfect and I have seen a bit of "selective deafness" but I think we have had it easier with her than any other pup.

Our Amy is now 5 months..I've a feeling we won't be so lucky with her though...she is a horror..

no he hasnt had any clases as yet i am researching what is available for us in this area, im quite dissappointed we found a place that runs classes specially for sbt and terrier breeds but was a bit of a trek away so are now looking closer to home maybe even within walking distance so that we could walk there run some energy off before class starts.. the recal and basic stuff like stay etc is quite easy as we are lucky enough to have a 25 ft by 150 ft back garden....

I would also say that his recall is good for his age but as he gets older he will begin to explore and go further away from you - so just be aware this may happen - however in saying that Rocco was exactly like Buddy and he recall is still excellent - Diesel on the other hand was a totally different kettle of fish (dog) lol -

Although I am happy to say Diesel is good most of the time
