Recall issues

Post by staffylover70 on Sun 20 Sep 2009, 19:34

Is recall something that gets better as the dog gets older? Reuben is the youngest dog I have owned and the only one where I am strugging with recall.
I can take him out and let him off on the fields which I do regularly but have to be on guard for any other dog coming into the field. He is not bothered by people in the slightest and has no interest if someone walks by.
When he is off lead he will come back as soon as I tell him, however should another dog come onto the field I know for a fact he would be off like a shot regardless of what I say or do. He sees every other dog as a playmate which is great because he loves to play with them but it is a pain as far as recall is concerned.

I do use an extender lead when we are on the fields and in the park and regularly tell him to come, at which point he will come back to me and sit down so I then praise him and give him a treat. I have just ordered a 50' training lead to give him a bit more freedom on the fields when there are other dogs around and will continue with the on lead training.

I know all dogs are different but I wondered at what age you were able to be 100% with your dogs off lead?

Some dogs are never 100% off lead.
Luna will ignore dogs but people - she's off to say hello. I can keep her with me if I see them first and tell her to stay close.
Xan and Sharky are very good I'd give them a 99.99999% - but they've always been good at recall.
He is still very young and IMO they only really start settling at around 2 years old.
Just keep practicing! is unfortuantely all I can say

i know this is a really old post but i was wondering the same as staffylover.

Slev's recall has been brilliant up until a few days ago!!

I had him on his extendable so he didnt go running off but he just wasnt listening! I've been taking him up to the local park every afternoon just to be around the other dogs, not for a play or anything because he has his half an hour run around in the morning, so he sits by me getting used to being around all the other dogs as he still gets sooooo excited around them. But when he's spotted a dog running across the park, he almost pulls my arm out of its socket!

I've just bought a 50' training lead too as the one i have is only 10ft. Just seems like we're going backwards as today he didnt take any notice of me whatsoever!

I've been using a dog training whistle and he's perfect around the house when we practice and had been great with it in the park on his training lead but now its just not happening!

They also have their days - being hyper or calm, happy or depressed like we do. He's also maturing and can try and push his luck in little ways. If you're constant with his training it'll all come right again.

I thought cassie was 100%, but today we met a very hyper chocolate lab that spooked her as she has been attacked by a lab in the past, the lab was jumping all over me I was covered in B***y mud and not at all impressed, cassie shot off quite a way ahead, I panicked and used a very upset voice to call her back she did not respond but then responded to the whistle thank goodness scary

I still find it difficult to get Ruby to come back to me some days but I usually take treats out with me every morning to do training and find that if I bang the treat box it gets her attention and she comes back. Don't know if this will help anyone?

Hope you and Cassie are OK.

Normally Sookie is OK at recall. Her interest in generally not in other dogs but their owners. She will run straight past the other dog to their owner like she is meeting with a long lost friend.

I normally carry a toy ball in my jacket and if she is not quick to respond, show her this when calling her, which usually gets her running back.
