puppy toilet training

Post by toni2575 on Mon 20 Jul 2009, 21:22

Hi there,

we have just brought a gorgeous girl staffie and we have called her jade.

I was wondering if I could ask you for some advise. Although puppy is responding to being house trained quite well using the crate method, I am trying to get her to do her toilet in the corner of our garden. i have fenced her off an area and at first i would place her in this area and she would go a toilet. The last two days this has changed and as soon as i place her in the fenced area she jumps out and toilets somewhere else in the garden. I try picking her up and placing her back in the area but she will jsut keep jumping out. i was wondering if you can train your puppy to go a toilet in a certain place and if so do you have any advice on how I can achieve this?

thanks in advance
toni

You can - I think you might have to put her on a lead so you can contain her in that spot - and remember to treat and praise her when she does go in her toilet area.

You could also try putting some of her poo in that area if shre does it elsewhere so she can smell it and learns thats the toilet.

I personally wouldn't confuse her too much .
If she is going well in the garden then it's better than your house .
She may pick up on any frustration you show if she doesn't go where you want her to .
As said , plenty of praise and use a trigger word ....

Good point Monty, what we do is we have a fence at the bottom of the patio that has a gate so the whole thing is shut off from the grass, all my dogs go on that area they have a corner each as we used to shut it off until the had been and they will come back up from the grass to poo but will wee anywhere. As I have 4 kids its the poo and not the state of the grass that bothers me so that works for us.
