peeing in crate, please help!
Hi, im really needing some help with my six month old, girl staffy dana. she pees in her crate nearly everynight, to the point were i had to take her blankets away. since i took her blankets she stopped peeing in her crate, just like that... but if i put them back she pees! i dont give her water late at night and i give her a toilet break before bed and at 5am in the morning. i dont understand why she still pees. sometimes she still pees even in the bare crate and i wake up to a pee soaked upset dog.
i really dont know what to do?
she was very hard to house break, but she rarely has an accident in the house now.
ALTHOUGH she does leak small amounts of pee in her sleep, and sometimes she completely pees herself in the sleep when i cuddle her. i had to shake her awake as she was deep sleeping and had no idea she peeing in her sleep. i take her straight out when this happens, and let her finish outside. she has been to the vets about it, but they didn't find anything. they said something might be a miss, but their not sure. it could just be her. i got her from a breeder at 4months and they kept 5 pups in one small pen that was smelly. could this be effecting her now?
anything would be helpfull right now. especially if antone has had the same problem...

Re: peeing in crate, please help!
It is definitely affecting her now IMO, if she was kept in a crate until 16 weeks and taught to toilet in there you have to reteach her that she can't do it. The normal crate training rules such as blocking half of the crate off will not apply here as she is obviously thinking this is the norm.
I personally would start in the day and everytime she goes outside praise her and give her a treat this means that outside = good. I would set my alarm for maybe every 2 - 2 1/2 hours in the night and get up and take her out and then this time can be made longer on a nightly basis until she is going through the night, please don't leave her in a bare crate though, its uncomfortable and cold for her, just wash the blankets as and when necessary until she's sorted

Re: peeing in crate, please help!
i would say Watts' suggestion is the way to go, sounds like she doesnt have the normal "hygiene etiquette" that most pups do due to being made to wee in a small space in the first place. and yes please dont leave her in a bare crate, my pup still messes at night sometimes and i ALWAYS make sure she has a bed to sleep on, even if its just a towel

Re: peeing in crate, please help!
Aw - bless both of you, that must be so frustrating.
I cannot add any insight, but did want to mention adding some white vinegar to the wash water when you clean the crate's blankets. After Barney arrived he seemed to be doing well with house breaking, but then had a set back. I did what watts suggested, but for him I needed to set my clock for every hour on the hour. After several days he understood and we've not had a single accident since in the past 2 years. With the peeing in the sleep, it would seem she's quite a heavy sleeper. It makes me wonder if there might be some sort of physical problem with the urinary track or something since she is experiencing leaking and sleep peeing. Good luck - I can only imagine this must have you quite at your wit's end.

Re: peeing in crate, please help!
thanks for your help guys, i really appreciate it all your feed back. putting towels in her crate is a good idea, but dont get me wrong. i make sure she's not cold at night (she sleeps in our bedroom) and its actually summer and we are experiencing a heat wave so its not getting cold here.
has anybody experienced similar problems like dana's? i cant find anyone else how has a staffy lik mine and im worried the breeders i bought her off, knew she had these problems before i bought her... if something is physically wrong with her uniary tract, is it fixable? the vets gave me some sort of medi that was meant to help her hold her bladder better. but it gave her serious depression so we had to stop. living in a small country town, the vets have limited experience. and i feel they dont really know how to help me and dana. any suggestions?

Re: peeing in crate, please help!
Hi, I had same problem with my Sulley!! He was just over 13 weeks when we got him and we had terrible problems with him wetting/messing his crate nearly every night. All we kept doing was changing his bedding all the time and disinfecting his crate with stronger smelling disinfectant!! He's 10 months now and it is probably only the past 3 months that he has stopped doing it but hw is the only one of our 3 that will still wet if he is left a bit too long!! I think age of getting them is something to do with it (tho no expert!!) We got our first Daisy at 5 weeks (far too young we know but if we didn't take her then she would have gone anyway!!) and she toilet trained immediatley, within a week of taking her out for a toilet break regularly she has never messed in the house ever! Our second Missy was 10 weeks old when we got her and she had been from a breeder that kept them all in their garage in crates and she took alot longer to toilet train and even now she will wee if she needs to!! But Sulley was a nightmare!!! My washing doubled and i have had to buy so many blankets due to the rate we were going thro them and even still i've had to raid my airing cupboard to find extra bedding!!! It is really hard work and feels like it goes on forever but you sound very determined to sort it and hopefully it will settle down in time!! The other thing we did is put our eldest Daisy in his crate with him the odd time!! I think he got a complex cos Daisy is so clean her face said it all if Sulley wet her bed too!!! Don't know if it my influence or Daisy!!! I really hope it settles and don't worry you're not the only one!!!! x
