Help!! toilet training at night??

Post by molly28_1998 on Tue Apr 15, 2008 3:25 am

Hi All,

As you all prob know we have had Hanna now for 2 weeks now. Each night she is put to bed in her crate. Nearly every night she wakes and wants to go to the toilet several times.I get out of bed IMMEDIATELY when I hear her crys for the toilet. I take her outside etc....sometimes she will still wet her bed during the night. I am going to try to feed her earlier, her last feed is usually at 7pm,. then toilet several times, then off to bed about 9.0-10pm. She will wake about 1am and again at about 4am, then up for the morning at 5.30am.

What can i do about her wetting her bed, even though i do take her out. I dont see how i can ignore her crys, (sometimes she doesnt cry, just wets)when I know that she will need to go outside.

Also I have had to buy her a new bed, as i wasnt sure even though I had washed all her bedding, if she could still smell urine, and wet there. I even cleaned the crate and bed with vinegar & water, as I read that this can stop them.

Q.1 What should I do at night, she does need to go in the crate, as Roxy doesnt want her in her bed.

Q.2 what too clean her bedding with and to stop her re using the bed for a toilet.

Any advise will be great!!!

12 nights with out a full night sleep and counting!!! yawn

Morris used to need to use the toilet at least once or twice a night for weeks after we first got him, I put up with getting up a couple of times a night and then he just didnt need to anymore :-bd

As for cleaning, we had a cleaning spray from a pet supply store that cleaned the mess and got rid of the smell that can attract them back to that spot. I dont know of any home remedies.

Hope this helps!

hehe, yeah like a month so around 4 weeks Big grin

It did gradually get less and less each night, he would get up so I would take him out and he would sit on my feet and look at me like I was the biggest meanie for taking him outside, so I took him out less and then not at all!

Hi Molly wave love the wildlife pick. K&M is right about the spray from the pet store/vets as normal household cleaners wont eliminate the smell. If she has a large crate partition it off to stop soiling one end. Can she see Roxy from where she sleeps? If they sleep in different rooms you could try leaving her crate open ,if there are no dangers in the room, and putting down some newspapers away from her crate for her to use in the night. In the morning place the soiled newspapers in the garden, somewhere Roxy doesnt go. So she has her own scent in her own place. And praise heaps if she goes there. Puppies at Hannas age need to go every 1-4hrs and all pups are different. Sleep deprevation is a killer, i ended-up sleeping on the settee with Tia i was so tired she'd only sleep for a few hours. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, honest, soon she will be sleeping through the night, and holding her bladder. Wish you well keep us informed :-bd

I just found the rest of the spray bottle of the stuff we used, it is called 'Fido's Odour Eliminator'.

See it didn't last too long I still have some left in the bottle laughing

Thanks for the help winking Her crate is a medium size, so not much room to wee in. We are still getting up and taking her out about twice a night. Even Hubby is helping now!! YAAYYYYYYYYYY. Hanna is due back to the vet today to see about her urine infection, hopefully its all settled down and we can start to look forward to some sleeps. I think the longest she has gone at night is about 4-5hrs, so we are slooooowly getting there! Thnaks again :-bd

Its really hard listening to them cry but my suggestion to you is buy some ear plugs laughing Letting him sleep in your bed is a bad idea unless you're prepared to always have him sleeping with you and i cant imagine that to be the case!!
You'll have to put up with the crying for at least the first few nights but then Turbo will get used to it!! Just make sure you're getting up every few hours to let him go out for a wee. Once he gets older he'll be able to hold his blader for longer...but at the moment be prepared to be really sleep deprived for the first few weeks!! yawn

Well Hanna is 15weeks old this week, and we are still taking it in turns to get up with her each night. We are probably getting up about 2-3 times and she is learning to do a wee really fast at those hours of the morning, cause she hates being outside in the cold weather!!! She did have an accident (wee) in the crate this weekend, but as for any baby, time will soon change that, (i hope sad ). She does still have problems with a urine infection, and apparently will grow out of it. So as for now, its up every 3-4hrs during the night.

dkjdsn:- i think just being consistant with the crate is about all you can do. Make sure there are some soft toys for your baby to snuggle with, that its a warm, cosy bed, we also put a blanket over the top of the crate, to create a little den for Hanna. I agree with Esther, you have to start off with puppys, the way you intend for them to be when grown up. If you want Turbo to sleep with you each night, im sure thats fine with Turbo!! But its better for them to have their own bed too. Hey, and nobody want poop in their bed!! surprise . Good Luck batting eyelashes

Turbo is getting better and more used to being in the crate now!!! :-bd After playing hard and having him chase me for about 15-20 mins he gets tired and sleepy....and I put him in the crate to sleep!! And we both take a nap!! laughing I think i'm getting fit too from all the running and playing with Turbo!! Big grin

Molly Try playing with him right before bed time....like have him run around.......and stuff so She will be tired. It been working so far with Turbo.......
And put the bed on the very edge inside the crate.......so if you dont get up ur pup will poo or pee on the other side of the crate, away from her bed.
