Keano Hates our Neighbours dog

Post by Keano on Fri May 09, 2008 2:49 pm

And I mean that literally - He would kill it if he had the chance. When we rescued Keano we were told that he was good with other dogs and 99% of the time that is true. But when it comes to our neighbours West Highland Terrier he goes nuts and we get real aggression, hackles and tail up and we have to drag him away and put him indoors till he calms down. Can anyone offer advice on this as it can be quite embarassing.

n.b. all the kids in our area love Keano and the feeling is mutual - Keano loves kids.

I just dread what will happen if he manages to get hold of the westy next door.

i have the same problem with my billie i tell her off and off and every time she does i send her to bed but she still does it, what i would do is keep a eye on the fence, what i think it is she protecting her territory.

Sorry don`t think i can help you with that.
maybe Keano is traumatized when he was young maybe attacked by a westy ?
it`s good to hear he`s good with kids .

Start taking Keano into your garden on a lead, while he is missbehaving over the other dog try and get his attention, for every time you do get his attention give him a treat, keep this up intill you can get him to sit, allways try and stay calm and try to get inbetween Keano and the dog next door, while you are calm it will pass onto him that the other dog is no threat, it takes a little while but you will see results pretty quickly, you dont want to remove him from the trouble area you want to remove that behavior from him in that area, as i said keep rewarding him for every time you get his attention untill you can get him to sit and eventually stay while next doors dog is still there.

have tried the treats thing and everything with my girl Zeebo, still got nowhere with her. Think it maybe that nextdoors dog loves Dante, as she was there first, she always cries and whines through the fence to him,
But Tias having none of it! Must say though its always nextdoors that starts growling first and Tia just reacts. Wish i could cure it though, neighbours keep apologising cause they can't stop their's from starting, they've tried everything too. So either of us just bring them in. Their's is a pitty so i dont really want them to meet, as allready been suggested, as mine is still a young staffy, not a year old yet. Don't think its a good idea or is it a solution? would like some advice please winking

Staffsrock, I too have a puppy (Tia). She is 12 weeks old. She has been very well socialised & she too will bark when on her own property at other dogs but when away from the house she absolutley adores other dogs. Also if i am holding her in my arms she will growl at other dogs but put her down & she is fine. I do always check with other owners if they are friendly before letting her jump all over them, she is now in a little click with a doberman who barks at her to play, a bassett hound who is so laid back she jumps on him, a king charles spaniel who keeps her in line & a heinz 57 who she thinks is her boyfriend. I walk her every night with this little group & have done for the past week and she has shown no sign of aggression, we walk them on the leads to start with close to one another & they are all fine, the others are then let off but not tia just yet & they come over to her and she wags her tail like mad. Perhaps you could try walking her on her lead with the neighbour walking their dog & when she sees there is no threat she may be more accepting of her. Worth ago this was what a woman did with a doberman who didn't like other dogs, she joined a group of local dog walkers & they met up every night with all the dogs on the leads, the dobie growled & barked for a few nights but once it realised there was no threat & lots of treats when he walked well he soon learned to accept other dogs! Good luck Kind regards Rich........

Making sure your dog can't see the Westie will help but won't solve the problem as Staffrock says. Unfortunately once your dog is reacting nothing will get his attention, the rewards of doing it are too high. The more he does it the more he wil do it. sad

Thanks for your post Rich winking much appreciated.
She is fine with others on a walk big or tall she wants to be friends with everyone, its just nextdoors, who's 20" and fine with my boy. But Tia and her met outside the house once and Tia nearly caught it from the bigger one!
I show no fear round dogs and get on fine with nextdoors, but the pair just wont get on. I dont want her to get hurt. Nextdoors is a rescue and they have no clue to her background as she was found a stray.I will try your method soon and let you know how they're doing cheers

Of course I wish you luck, trying to solve the impossible you really need it rolling on the floor Seriously, it is with problems like this that we learn about our dogs and how to get them to do what we want them to. I will never forget the first time my little, 10ins high dog wanted to kill the dog she could see, it was a Weimaraner, I made mistakes at first but now she is wonderful with other dogs.
