2 Male Staffies?
Hi
I'm new to the site but need some advise. I currently have a male staff who is almost 2 years old and I have recently seen another male staff at a rescue home. I instantly feel for the second dog and would like to give him a home.
The staff there said that the staffy was extremely soft and that he would mix with any dogs. This filled me with confidence. I decided to take my staff to see the one in the home to see if they got on ok. When they were together initially my staff tried to play with the rescue one and when the rescue one tried to pick up the toy my staff got v. aggressive towards him (in fact he has started to get aggressive towards other dogs recently too which he has never done before).
The staff said that they were trying to find out who was boss and all was fine. We spent an hour with the dogs together and they were fine, mine showed no agression and they walked fine together, no further jealous etc...
The staff assured me that they would be a good match as the new one instantly surrendoured and the pecking order had been decided (but surely as the new one matures and grows in confidence this may change)?
I decided to go for the second staff and signed details but have since been advised that mixing two staffs together is a huge mistake.
I am at work four hours in the morning, go home for an hour lunch time and go back to work for a further 3 hours in the afternoon. The dogs would be left alone together and I am trying to figure out whether or not this is a good idea. I have read that two males staffs will kill each other over any small mistake of glance etc.. and I obviously couldn't bear this for either of them.
Can anyone give any advise on two male staffs, experience they've had with the staffs and general feedback.
This would help me so much and I appreciate any info.
Thanks in advance

they could have a fight it could be a good idea when you leave them alone put 1 in a room and put the other one in another room just to make sure.
my mate had 2 male and left them once come back to nearly 2 half dead dogs with blood all over the place

Mine was neutered a while ago and Hogan (the rescue dog) is being done before we have him. He seems very submissive even though he is only a few months younger than our's and isn't done?!

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
i can't believe that the staff at the centre said all will be ok, and advocate two sbt males together.
you may get them being ok together most of the time but it's their potential you have to realise, a small disagreement is almost guaranteed to become a blood bath. this may even take years to occur and you may be lulled into a false sense of security.
the boys would need sepearting not only when you sleep but at night too if they don't share your bedroom.
I even seperate my girls who haven't even ever grumbled at each other. but thats me being overly cautious i think.
Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but so pleased you have asked before you get into something you may live to regret

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
Can I ask - how long do you leave your dogs alone for? The main reason for getting the staffie was for company and it is now clear I can not under any circumstances leave them alone together.
I would never risk either getting hurt. I am annoyed that the rescue home advised that they would be fine and that I was being over cautious and will make this clear to them when I go there. I do still want to give this dog a home but i'm now worried that my house is not the right set up for seperating two dogs off for such lenghty hours.
Currently we have allowed Harvey the Kitchen, Utility and a paved area outside for space whilst i'm at work! but i'm not sure I have the room for another dog with such space
Better to know sooner rather than later!

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
Well Harvey goes out every morning I go to work for 4 hours, come home for an hour lunch time and then i'm back again 2 hours later, he goes out every evening and is fine with that - he's had that routine for almost two years but I just feel its a long day for him, so thought i'd get him some company! I have two cats that are around all day but he just tries chasing them to play with - which they don't get!

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
Hi
From what you have said about your dog I personally think that this would potentially be a mistake and you would possibly have to rehome the dog again which would be terrible for the dog. If you have reservations now you need to think about what is in the best interest of the dog in the long run. You have said that you dog has recently shown aggression to other dogs so maybe another dog is not the way forward? When I rescued my bitch (I already had a male) they were kept seperate by a dog guard between the two rooms for a month when we were at work and even though they have been together for almost 4 years now we never leave a toy out when we leave as they still will not share and it is normally the bitch that is aggressive one in these circumstances and does not hesitate in having a go at my male (Even though he could swallow her in one gulp!). Would the rescue centre consider a staged introduction with the dog coming into your home? You could then see how your existing dog would react with another male on his territory. I personally have never had two males and would not consider it unless they were brought up from being very young together but that is just a personal choice and would apply to any breed of dog I may have. Sayng that my sister has a male staffy and a male mongrel who get on great together, in this instance though she got the staffy at 4 months. I do appreciate it is a difficult decision for you and you are probably already smitten by the dog in rescue, please let me know how you get on.

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
I would never take the risk with two male staffys who have not been reared together
Even two who have can turn on each other
Why dont you go for a female who is about a year old from a rescue center and who has been spayed
does it have to be another male?
You are better of with a female in my opinion and the company for him would be good.

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
Hi
Thought I'd keep u up to date, I asked the animal rescue centre again if they believed 2 staffies were fine and they said there would be no problem if there was going to be we would have seen it already!
I did fall in love with the dog and picked him up saturday (only a day after he was neutered!)
They were fine for bout 8 hours then a big fight broke out!
The next day they were fine all day and then when we walked them we let them free on a field (neutral ground) and they just went crazy and had a huge fight.
I have taken the dog back to day less than 48 hours since having him and already two v. serious fights. I informed the centre I was not happy bout the way they handled the rehoming, they wouldn't let us keep them together to see how things got on and didn't advise us on the dogs breed. I found all this out by myself through research (which I stupidly ignored!) they are saying that they don't have to inform us of these kind of things which I think is awful! a rescue centre should inform a potential rehomer of the concerns, potential risks, damage, good and bad points - not just shove a dog out the door! I will be taking this further! I also don't think that a dog should be realised (or pushed out) only 20 hours after an op no matter how big or small.
Sorry for the long post but this is my frustration that is building up inside me - whilst i'm trying to work!

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
2 males can work out, but i personally would not advise owning 2 males so close in age your just asking for trouble.
Shame on the rescue center for just palming this male off on the 1st person that expressed an interest in him
The problem with most mixed breed centers is they have no knowledge on staffords. A experienced Stafford owner knows full well that a Stafford thats dog aggressive does'nt give out normal doggie language warning signs, they just fly in.
Before anyone decides to get another additional Stafford, male or female its wise to 1st know your other Stafford. Know what sparks them off etc. You need to know your Stafford inside and out. Only then would i advise go get another.
Owning one Stafford is easy, it gets harder and harder the more you own together

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
It was infact the rescue dog that had something that sparked him off. Not mine, I know he is fine with other staffords to the extent that he lived at home with a male x for a year and hence why I now feel he needs more companion ship. ( I moved out with my dog nearly a year ago).
I have taken the advise of others on here and have decided to get a female staffie (preferrable a puppy or younger dog).
Thanks for your feedback

Good luck in your search for a new girlie addition.
Its also the rescues responsiblity to suss out what makes the staffords in their care tick too

Yes I've had an ongoing conversation with the homing centre as it would appear that they only had logan in a day before they advised us on his behaviour with dogs! I am not happy!! This is not enough time to know how he will react!
I am searching I have some some puppies at hereford and worcester rescue so will see how that goes.

Thank you - to let you know I have found a lady in Cheltenham that has staffie x with american staffie puppies, they are currently 7 weeks old, and she has two girls still unreserved. She said they are not ready to take home (which we knew but glad she is being responsible - unlike when we got harvey!) so we can go and see them tomorrow and if we are taken, we can see her regularly until time to take them home, which falls on the week we have off, v. pleased! fingers crossed this is going to work out ok. xx

i wouldn't take a risk with them, but it is upto you. the thing when then are fully grown and they turn out the size of a am staff the dog could be classed a pitbull type.
this is what you could get if you found to have a ban dog.

The Maximum penalty for possessing a banned dog is a fine of 5,000 or six months imprisonment, or both

Re: 2 Male Staffies?
The pups are cute, but sorry to say this but NO AmStaffs were bought over to the UK. Pit bulls yes.
AmStaffs are the show cousins to the pitbull, their bred for looks where as Pits just how game they are.
Most of the general public are weary of anything with pit init, so the sellers of such dogs have just renamed them
The breeder of these pups maybe believe they own an Amstaff, as that is what they were told by their dogs breeder.
Lets put it this way, put a lab to a Stafford and the pups would come out looking very pitbulishl or what ppl think is a Amstaff as its more thicker set, when infact the pups dont have an ounze of pitbull blood in them
Plus 300 for a mongrol
if you look around you could get a unpapered stafford for that.
