Elsdon

[img:a3a7]http://i816.photobucket.com/albums/zz90/jrjanrobinson/DSC00444.jpg[/IMG
Just a few pictures of Elsdon just before he went out for a walk with Glynn tonight. We've been so tired this week I haven't had time to come on the forum and let you know how he's getting on.
It was a nightmare at first, he was hyper and kept lunging at and pulling at Ruby but he has calmed down a hell of a lot now. I think changing his food to Chappie biscuits and a regular walk regime has helped.
I have to admit that at first I couldn't cope and was all for sending him back this weekend but we've stuck with him and even took him to Dog Training on Wednesday where he went mad to sniff everywhere at first but once we had a training collar on him and gave that a couple of good yanks he knew we meant business and just sat there and watched with interest.
He is always hungry and wants EVERYTHING Ruby has so we've had to discipline him a lot but he has taken it and has learnt to leave her when we say so.
A good friend has been taking him out for walks and socialising him to horses, sheep and chickens when we've not been at home during the day and he has enjoyed sleeping on his sofa for an hour as well as snoring loudly on ours!
He's a big lad but is also gentle when he wants to be.
He has got issues but we are trying our best to work through them. The main one being he wants to be top dog over Ruby so anyone with any ideas please let me know. Tea time is probably quite interesting for our neighbours if they look through our kitchen window. Me and Glynn pretend to eat out of his bowl first and then he sits and waits until I tell him to eat it!
Things can only get better...............
Just noticed Ruby's eyes in these pictures - she's got that devil dog look again!!!

Re: Elsdon
Great to see some pictures of him and Ruby Jan, they both look great. Glad you are managing to work through some of his issues, it will take time but I am sure you will get there. Elsdon could not ask for better owners that you and Glynn.
Not sure about the top dog issue and how much say you will have in this. Chloe is def the dominant one of my two, Reuben knows his place and they both know theirs with me

Re: Elsdon
They sometimes sleep on the top of the sofa together. This morning they looked like book ends. Elsdon is definitely the bigger pushy dog, but Ruby has her moments. Hopefully they will continue.

Re: Elsdon
Thanks so much. Life is certainly interesting with Elsdon about. I've just climbed on the top of the sofa and sat there to let him know I'm higher up the pack than him and he just slid down and stayed there. Ruby is on the floor, she's fed up with having her nose pushed out I think. But I'll sort it - hopefully.

Re: Elsdon
I read in a book that when you get a new dog should greet, treat and so on in the pack order. So always Ruby first then Elsdon.

Re: Elsdon
He's gorgeous but looks like a bouncy mess. As he settles more and more it'll become better. It takes a few month unfortunately so just be calm and patient. Good Luck!
If she's letting him be the top dog you'll have to accept that, they work that out between themself.

Re: Elsdon
Thank you all for your help and I understand about the top dog thing, and that yes they will work it out for themselves. One thing I'd like to know is how to teach him to play without mouthing or going over the top? I think maybe in short bursts and stopping as soon as he is too excited?

I think it is back to basics with a firm NO! He may not have had much education in this area.

Re: Elsdon
Apparently he was left for long periods on his own and had no training either, so what he has picked up in the last three weeks is amazing. He certainly is intelligent and made me laugh last night, he saw his own reflection in the cooker door and couldn't work out what it was

Mine still do that now, catch a glimpse in the oven or the fire surround and stop dead, look and then move their heads from side to side!

Cairo sees herself in the oven and the laptop when it goes into shutdown mode and she goes ballistic!

Re: Elsdon
Great improvements. Even letting Ruby eat her tea in peace (he is always hungry and wants hers) and sitting patiently until I tell him he can have his. Bless! He has also got kennel cough from somewhere on his travels so has a snotty nose at the moment and has just dribbled it all over my keyboard!
