Re: starting out
I would think you should start at a staffy obed club. Once training is on it's way they should be able to point you in the right direction i would think, If not, just do a google search on dog shows & you should get some info on where to apply.

Re: starting out
Hi guys just seen this post first thing you have to do is to go to training classes and get your puppy used to all other dogs and noises , also there will be people there that show there dogs so get talking to them and ask lots of questions , i would also find out were there is a show on and go and have a look to see how its done , also your dog has to be 6 months before you can show them and they have to be kc reg or here in Ireland its the ikc reg , here,s a link to the show dates and places in the uk
http://www.staffords.co.uk/ just click onto show info and it will tell you the dates of the showes and were they are
hope this helps

Re: starting out
great cheers
seems easier than i thought. lemme get it straight... i train the kc reg'd pup, and then i can just enter shows? provided of course i have a decent example of the breed standard.
what kinda fees are involved in shows?

Re: starting out
Angel was so head strong at an early age training was wasted on her ..
She would be awkward just for the sake of it ...
But after her second season her nature , demeaner and attitude changed dramatically ...
She has had a bit of ringcraft and i'll show her soon ...
But please , showing can just be for fun , not just winning ...
And it's not all that expensive either ...
Look up your local breed club for their next show and go along ...

Cost depends on the show you enter.
A championship show show can cost anything up to £25 to enter but the smaller shows can be as little as £4.00

Re: starting out
Here in Australia you can start showing your pup from 12 weeks but your pup can't start to get challenge points until they are 6 months old. Here you must register and pay Show fees around one month prior to any given show. Here you also have to be a member of your states dog association which incurs a yearly fee. Get your pup used to being touched by strangers all over eg: mouth (lifting lips and looking at teeth side and front) muzzle, head, ears, along back, down legs, tail, bottom area ect. You will need to learn how to stack your dog and learn the ropes with regards to the way you take your dog around the ring eg: triangle, circle, up and back ect. Get your dog used to having dogs behind and infront of him. You have to have a registered pup and the most important part on your staff I have found is his mouth and movement, if he does not have a nice neat scissor bite or gate it may be very hard to find judges that will award you anything. It's so much fun and you get to travel and spend quality time with your buddy!

Re: starting out
Once your pup has had all his vaccinations I would take him along to a dog show for a look.
Watch what other exhibitors do with their dogs and you will learn whats expected of you.
Would the breeder of your puppy be able to help you with this? A mentor is a wonderful way to learn the ropes with a new pup.
Patience and consistency is the key. I walk mine every day on a lead which encourages the pup to walk with you rather than towing you everywhere!
Ask friends to check your pups mouth, and run their hands over his body so he gets used to it.
It can take months and months of training before your pup (and you) gets the hang of things.
Remember that its just a fun day out and not to take the show, or yourself, too seriously....you take the best dog home, win or lose...

Re: starting out
Where to in wales do you live? I think its in Neport they have a stafford ringcraft (show training). You wont be able to take your pup to a show till he/she is 6 months but its well worth teachin them to stand and be looked over beforehand. Get puppy used to having it's teeth checked and strange people touching it!
