Re: Adopting A Staffy
Hello,
Lovely that you are getting a dog, however i think that you will not be allowed to be the registered owner of the dog as most rescues will only rehome to people over the age of 18. In fact i think there is a new law that states that you have to be at least over 18 to buy an animal. I think i that's right.
Of course this doesn't mean that you can't take responsbility for the dog and i think the most responsible thing you could do for your dog is to find a good training class and go regularly with him.
This will be good for you and your dog and your relationship together, increasing your bond as you will be learning together.
Have a look to see if you can find classes in your area on www.apdt.co.uk these trainers will be trained and the methods they use will be kind, fair and effective, which is very important if you want a well bahaved dog, which likes and respects you.

hi and welcome, how lovely you are adopting and taking such an interest. i'm sure the shelter will give you lots of advice and help and it's a little difficult to offer advice without knowing dogs history etc, but we are all here to answer questions as and when you want.
wish you lots of luck and happy times

Oh thats such a shame
They can also be very gentle, especially with children
And can be left on there own too, if grown, once settled in
Maybe your mom may let you have one when you're older so dont despair
still post the pics of whichever dog you get under other pets, i wish you well with the adoption and look forward to pics

Re: Adopting A Staffy
good on you staffylvr for wanting to look after a staffy. I think any breed of dog can suffer from seperation anxiety, not just staffys, but I guess they do like to be with people as much as possible too. They are a strong dog, but with training and socializing can also be fantastic!! I know its hard too when you see them in the pounds, with their sad faces....Im also from Melb, and not sure if you saw the Sunday paper recently there was a double page spread about dogs that were dumped at the pound because the owners were complaining that they had muddy paws!!! There was a pic of a beautiful Staffy called Spike who was 3yrs and his owners didnt want to wipe his feet!! Makes Ya Mad!! Im sure when the time is right for you, you will have your dreams come true with a staffy. Keep looking, learning and researching the breed, this too might help Mum to come around!! Good luck!

Re: Adopting A Staffy
no worrys staffylvr, if this is the breed that you really love, then go for it. Im sure that you know too that a dog is for life. If you do eventually get a staffy, whether its from a rescue or a breeder( maybe you can talk your mum into going to KCC park in Skye or the Showgrounds, where they have competitions for Staffys to compete in. This is how we actually got our Hanna, we went along, talked to lots of breeders, also met the dogs too. We met Hannas Dad there, and was told about his litter soon due.) We were able to meet hannas mum and also get to know them both too. If your really keen, maybe this could be away of showing your Mum that your interested in the breed. Im going along to a Staffy show in Dec(i know its heaps ages away!!) at KCC partk in Skye but I would be happy to catch up with you and your mum too, if you like. Here is the website for the Staffy Club of Victoria, they have the dates also regarding shows etc. Good luck, i must admit, they make the bestest friends!!!

Re: Adopting A Staffy
good on you for taking the time to really learn about having a dog in your life. for someone who is 13yrs you seem quite mature for your age, as there are dog owners well older than you, that havent and dont put in the required effort to having a dog in their lives. Keep up the good work, you will make a proud "dad" dog owner one day!
Keep us posted!!

Hi Staffylvr had a look at him on the link he's lovely
I can see why you want him
I agree with Molly about your maturity, and going to shows so your mom can speak to staffy owners and it may dispel some of the misgivings she has about them
I have my fingers crossed for you let us know how you get on

thats great, compromise is the key!! Im sure when you are older and maybe have your own place etc, you can still have a staffy then, then he/she will be all yours too!! Cant wait to see photos of your new one too!!
