Piriton

Post by P3nT4gR4m on Tue 21 Jul 2009, 21:24

I've heard a few people on this site mention Piriton. Sylar keeps coming out with a rash and lately a couple of spots that could be hives (hard to see under all that fur)

Teh vet gave him a steroid jab last time and it worked for a bit but then wore off. I'm positive it's a histamine reaction and figure as long as there's no side-effects I might as well try piriton just to see if it works. I've been dabbing brown cream I got from P@H on the scuff marks and it
helps but I feel i'm putting out fires when an antihistemine might stop
them from starting.

Thing is (dumb question time) is it just normal Piriton-human or is there a special dog one? Also for a 13-14kilo pup - 1 tab or half a tab?

You can use the human one and I am sure Watts recommended the chemist own brand as it is just as good, not sure on the dosage though but there are plenty of people on the forum who use it than can advise

I am giving Angel piriton at the moment .
She has reduced the time she licks and nibbles her paws .
I give her one tablet in the morning , one after her evening meal .

Yes i use it or at least i use my local chemists own brand which is exactly the same as the brand Piriton but half the price.

I give one a day to Charlie as she is alergic to nettles which at this time of the year are in full bloom.

If you have an aldi by you, you can get 12 tabs for 47p and they have EXACTLY the same ingredients, boots currently have an offer on if there is one of those close or any small independant chemist is a good bet,
I just gave one a day to my lot and it does work.

I'm glad you asked the question about human piriton. I'd been wondering the same thing!
When you say half a tab is that half in the morning and half in the evening? Just checking cos dont want to overdose her (tempting as it is to give her a whole one at night and get some sleep!!!).

The very same happened to our Tara when she was a pup only it was out of working hours for the vet so it was much more expensive for us, Tara still has the scar on her nose and we always keep Piriton in our cabinet just incase!

Yes it was very worrying at time, not only did her head swell up it also affected her breathing, I broke the speed limit in my car getting Tara to the vets that night for sure!lol.
Occaisionally Tara will bump her nose and even now it swells a little around the scar!

Ideally a young dog shouldn't be having steriod jabs but should be given oral medication.

Where is the rash and some pups get achne from time to time, but piriton would help sort that out.

rash is non-localised on the underside of the dog. Right now theres a patch on his chest and at one side further down but he's had it under is armpits. I'm thinking anywhere that's been in touch with either grass or some kind of plant. ie - allergy!
