Fantastic news - I was telling my boyfriend last night about the wee fella and I was gonig to ask you how Oscar was today.

Phew - I bet you are beginning to feel a little relieved that he is feeling better -

I am sure Oscar is gonig to spoilt rotten until Monday - and no doubt he will love his drive in the car - you are a very doting mum SmileSmile

I hope the vets prognosis on Monday is good - I am thinking of you and Oscar - big hugs to both of you and thank you for the update xx

Hi Staffie2,
Yep you guessed it.......... as his dad would say 'thats my boy!'

I suppose it makes a change from scooting his bum along the carpet!

I think his dad taught him all he knows!

Both!
The bum scooting is a rareity but the toy humping used to be a nightly occurrence until he has been unwell.

Thats wehn we will know he is REALLY better. I would like to say typical male but darent for fear of being told off!

How is Oscar today? I really sympathise what you have been going through- I can honestly say the last 2 weeks have been awful, especially all that Diesel has been through and its really worrying until you get answers.

Glad to hear that Oscar is making progress and I will be thinking of you all on Monday with my fingers crossed.

Its amazing what you do when they arent well, we were driving Diesel around to the park to lift him out to do his business , cos he wont do No 2's in the garden.

We now have a stair gate so he cant go up the stairs or on the bed, just to ensure he gets as much rest as possible. But we know they would do the same for us if they could.

Re: my oscars xray results

Post by staffie2 on Mon 12 Oct 2009, 10:47

hi all so we are back from the vets the vet has said that with a combination of the arthritus and the nerve damage in his back legs we need to decide weather to risk putting him to sleep for the mri scan this will be done at the royal kings cross vertainary hospital they can operate for the nerve damage but its not going to make the arthritus go away. he has now been moved onto a steriod called
PREVEICOX.
the other option is to carry on with the steriods and go and have some hydrotheraphy sessions. we really dont know what to do i absolutley fell apart outside the vets and didnt want to go in
and face what she was going to say we are going to sleep on it and need to let the vets know tommorow. i could tell in her eyes that she didnt think we should put him throught the stress and recovery of the scan or an operation. i dont know if we should just enjoy the time he has left he has gone downhill so quickly this time two years ago he was coming out running with me. sorry to go on ill let you all know what we decide tommorow. thanks,

Hello

Thanks for the update - kept visiting site every 5 mins for an update - been a nervous wreck waiting to hear from you.

gosh this really must be a very difficult decision to make - however which ever one you decide I am sure it will definately have Oscar best interest at heart. At least you do have 2 options to consider, which must be positive.

Has the vet said what side effect the Steriods may have and what positives has she given you to help you decide on the options you have been given?

I am sure you are feeling very confused at the moment and no doubt upset too

You will come to the right decision I am sure - do you have family you can discuss this with?

Huge hug for you and Oscar xx Suzie T

the vets said that the side affects could be him panting and drinking more and a bigger appetite as with any kind of steriods there are different side affects we are going to have more of a decussion tonight when my partner returns from work thanks for your kind surrport everyone.

Personally, and only my opinion.
If it was me, and I have faced this decision -
Let him enjoy his remaining time, I wouldnt put a dog of 10 plus years thorough any operations .

Big hugs to you and Oscar from me and Bronx

Hi Again

If I ever have to make this choice - personally I would go with the steriod & hydrotherapy option too -

See how this suits Oscar - if for whatever reason you were unhappy with his progess then I would speak to the vet again and discuss the 2nd option.

I am sure you will come to the right decision for your boy - as you know & understand what he needs best.

We are all behind you on this one - what ever you decide - Smile

I also wouldn't put any of mine through an anaesthetic at that age, if he can be made more comfortable on steroids then I would go down that route. To take him in for a check on something that they really csn't help with anyway and to lose him would just be devastating. Enjoy the good days and when the bad days outnumber the good then you have to rethink your options.

I'm so sorry for you

Really sorry to hear the news. I don't have much experience with this sort of thing myself, but my gut instinct would be to go down the medication route, and enjoy all the time that you do have with such a gorgeous boy.

Poor old boy!!! It is so hard when they start feeling their age. Personally I also don't feel it'll be fair on him to go through an op that will have him hurting for awhile to come. I would give mine the meds so they were as comfortable as possible for the time they have left. Good luck! It's such a sad situation

Hi Staffie2, have been thinking about you, your family and Oscar all day and have just got in and logged on.

Only from my experience, the vets who did Diesels MRI and spinal tap advised that the way they anaesthetized(?) him for the MRI was a safer way than when he was anaesthetized for the blood tests the week before??? Dont know how the procedures differ as I am not a vet!

Are you able to contact the Royal Kings Cross to talk through the procedure/risks with them. Thats what we did and we were able to make a really informed decision, knowing all of the facts.

Just a thought but is it worth delaying the decision until you can judge the effects of the new steroids???

Big slobbery licks to you and Oscar from Diesel and hugs from me x
