Charlie Update

Post by Maistaff on Wed 04 Nov 2009, 18:36

I picked up Charlie from the vets and she was very sore. She had undergone a GA to have X-rays done on her hind legs.

I am pleased to say that she has not ruptured the crutial ligamet. The vet feels that although the X-ray can not say for sure, she feels she may have slightly torn it and aggrivated it enough to cause the onset of lameness after exercise.

She has to be restricted to 2 weeks minimal walking max 10 mins per day and always on the lead. I have to avoid aggrivating the leg as much as possible. She has Rimadyl for the next two weeks and has to go back for a check up when it is finished.

Thankyou to everyone who was concerned about her

Thanks guys i am very pleased indeed. Real glad i had the x-rays done as i know for sure what i am dealing with and what i am not.

Decided that she won;t do any more agility until after then new year possibly beginning of Feb so that her leg can be rested fully.

Brilliant news!! Especially for such a fit dog.

Be very strict with the rest ..we had a limper who was medicated for two months and finally xrayed for arthritis and then 5 days after the all clear for arthritis slipped in the garden and ruptured his cruciate.

We are still in the recovery process with our mature boy ( he doesn't seem to realise he is 8 ) and it has a been a long slog...

I will be very strict as i really want Charlie to recover fully. She enjoys her agility and chasing a ball so so much that for me to think that she could never do it again as i was lazy and didn't follow the rules i would never forgive myself.

No she is a couch potato from now on She will be carried up and down the stairs etc and will be on the lead at all times when she is out. I have opted not to cage rest her as i don't want her to become stiff in the leg as i feel she still needs to move it rather than lay on it all day

Your old lad sound a charcater and a real joy to own at 8 years old of course he is still a puppy at heart !

Re: Charlie Update

Post by wids on Wed 04 Nov 2009, 19:38

For what it is worth I agree..good choice not going with the cage rest, we have noticed Bailey is definately stiffer after sleeping laying etc. Normal but restricted movement seems to be a better option

If I had any useful advice for anyone it would just be to say we have laminate floors through downstairs...had to go to trusty local Dunhelms and buy loads of mats and non slip mat grip to put down..we look like a turkish bazaar...but what matters is Bailey can walk about without slipping.

Best of luck and I hope she recovers well.

Glad it's not a torn ligament for her that's the best news. my jess stretched her side ligament & she is still recovering 1.5 mths later. The accident also caused major arthritis changes in her joint.

Hugs to her from us.

It's more than a year later and Luna still shows lameness when the knee gets over used BUT it takes more use than it did a few months ago. As I understand it, it's like an athlete hurting themself - you'll always have some trouble with the joint and should manage it as such.
When it just happened I also didn't give her to much rest - just on-lead exercise on straight road going at her pace for about 10 minutes.
She's actually built up a lot more muscle in that leg that also helps support the knee.
I watch her like a hawk - specially out on the farm as she loves running with everone chasing her. I can't be heartless so allow her 5 minutes and then she has to calm down.
My big worry is what happens if she hurts the other knee!
I'm treating her as an arthritic dog now -she gets 1500mg of Glucosamine and half a Rimadyl at night. I don't want to give her pain meds during the day when I can't watch her.
She's coping fine when she looks a bit stiff I do cold and hot compresses on the knee and and both hips and rub Arnica gel (the one for horses) into the knee and hips. It can make them very cold so I wrap her up and keep her on my lap. She loves the attention - lol

I think thats about the whole routine. The Arnica is great stuff as well. I use it on my own knee, ankle and shoulder that I've sprained and torn ligaments in - but it can make you cold!! I've slept under 3 duvets in the middle of summer!

Thanks Oxide

Like you i will be watching her like a hawk. I have re introduced Joint Aid a suppliment i stopped giving her about 5 months back choosing to give glucosamine on its own. I'll be honest cost caused me to do this as i was providing it to three dogs but the boys will remain on the staright glucosamine and CHarlie will get the Joint Aid on her own.

Like you i will be restricting exercise for a long time. This morning she could hardly walk, she was really reluctant to move and only managed to go for a pee under duress. I figure the manipulation has really aggrivated the joint

I will look into the arnica gel, to be honest i am open to anything that will ease her recovery and ensure that she heals as good as she possibly can.

I have spoken already with a Canine Touich person who is a qualified Mctimoney practitioner and i will be discussing some treatment sessions for Charlie

Its going to be a long road to recovery
