Aggressive Due To Raw Food?

Post by yarder on Mon 02 Nov 2009, 20:00

First topic message reminder :

Hi,

Oreo is 18 weeks old now and is on dry kibble. I have suggested a raw diet for him but mum says no its too expensive - Thats one thing. But She REFUSES To give him any raw food - Not even a raw chicken wing - She thinks it couls turn him aggressive e.g. he accidently bit someone , tastes their blood thinks of his raw chicken wing and rips them to shreds. She is adament that he will not be eating any raw meat. What Can I Say To Her To Allow Him To Have A Raw chicken wing - I Think he'd love it. She Thinks he will get a taste for fresh blood - I see where she is coming from - How right/wrong is she? . Thanks . x

Lol, Im sure an animal being fed unnatural food with additives and coloruings will be more loopy and not so much in it's 'right' mind in comparison to one which is fed entirely raw, natural food.

I know I always base it on personal experience but thats the best thing for me to base it upon. Charlie, bob and nelson all had bakers diet and they were all fine. Nelson lived untill 15 which is cracking for a ebt and had no health problems at all. Charlie is going to be 15 in June and I know she can still walk miles and miles and jump fences etc. I know its all down to pot luck but some people that join will be thinking OMG my dogs not going to be a senior because I feed kibble! Sorry, but its balls. Ok so you like to believe that you are doing best for your dog and we all do but food is not such the big issue really. I dont get it, I really really dont!

There's nothing wrong with a debate Jo. Just a shame some people take as a personal insult to their ownership which it's not intended to be.

A forum exists to debate about a subject we're all interested in, be it Staffys or what oil you use in your car, or if you're really sad talking and debating about dog poos Big grin

Also, Maybe a post about health risks barf could pose if not done correctly maybe.

People *did* do it years ago. That's the point, before kibble, dog's ate table scraps, bones and meat. Men developed 'dog food' to use low grade scraps and carcasses that weren't fit for humans in the 1930's. Thus the modern pet food industry was born.

Risks of BARF are mainly due to raw bones and deficiencies in vitamins if not fed correctly.

Yes it would, 'table scraps' means as it says, table scraps from humans would mean it's cooked, no one is saying you feed a dog exclusively raw.

Re: Aggressive Due To Raw Food?

Post by tracyp on Mon 09 Nov 2009, 00:26

Phew! What a thread!

Yarder, raw meat WILL NOT make Oreo aggressive or get the "taste" for blood. ( That's an old myth / wives tail!) Mine have all eaten raw & cooked meats & NOT ONE of them has ever been aggressive because of it. They also get a wide range of vegies & fruits along with kibble (especially as young pups. It does have a good balance of vitamins that a healthy pup needs). Mine also eat some canned dog food on occasion but not too often as it can cause a tartar build up if eaten too often.

The rule of thumb I use for my dogs meals is the same one I use for myself. The more times human hands have touched (processed) a product the less of it they eat.

Oreo will be fine without raw if that makes life easier at home for you both. Or! when you go for a walk, stop off at the butcher, grab a chicken neck or two & head to the park so he can chomp away before you head back home.

Best of luck. Get your mum to read this thread & maybe she will see things from a diff point?

I think its the same as us humans and processed food. Buying a ready meal from iceland which has preservatives in it and has been frozen for a year won't be as good for you as a fresh pork-loin steak from the butchers and a nice earthy spud. Dogs dont need those extra chemicals and theres no way theyre good for them, obviously lots wont be affected by their diet but SOME are and I just think its better dafe than sorry. I dont think these chemicals/additives are ever meant to enter our bodies and I reckon they contribute to long term illness sycg as cancer?!

I dunno I would just rather feed less ingredients than more Smile There are many very good foods on the market and if it suits your dog then why change it?

N.B Also be careful with feeding on the move, excerise after eating can lead to stomach probs (walking steadily should be okay just no runs or difficult hillwork after eating.

It's not as easy as that though mate. There's so much different advice, myths and half truths out there that it's baffling to a first time feeder in the main.

A good link for raw feeding and a natural appropriate diet for dogs is available from this link.

i see what you mean, well here,s what i feed my dog it may help,i give him a small bowl of jwb in the morning i do this as a supplement in case i miss anything out in his main meal, for his main meal it usually 2 lamb,s hearts chopped,a small handfull of mixed veg blended and then mixed with his meat,as for meaty bones i feed him chicken wings 2 off now and again beef rib bones once a week to keep his teeth clean lol,and once a month i treat him to a breast of lamb all is fed raw,he,s doing realy well on this diet and i am well settled now after a year and a half of getting a right balance, having said that there are many myth,s attached to raw feeding, but i find that when it comes to raw feeding i try to simulate a rabbit in what he eats hence the blended veg, hope this helps
