tuna in brine
hi
I have been feeding my 10 week old pup tuna in brine and was just wondering if this is ok. From what i understand brine has a lot of salt and dogs arnt meant to have salt is that correct? If not what tuna can you feed dogs. The only awailable option here in australia seems to be either tuna in oil or tuna in brine.
thanks

Re: tuna in brine
Can you get sardines? Tuna is quite high in Mercury so should not be given too regularly.
Are you feeding this with kibble?
You could also try scrambled egg

Re: tuna in brine
The tuna in sunflower oil would be best, or just drain the brine a bit.

Re: tuna in brine
I feed Harley the tuna in sunflower oil, but he only gets a tin every couple of weeks because of the mercury content.

Re: tuna in brine
Think you would have to feed a truck load of tuna to a dog to get any effect.
If you check the health sites (for humans) the only warning is basically as follows
If you are pregnant (cos it could "possibly " affect a foetus) - do not eat more than 4 cans a week. And they say there is a safety margin built in.. so you could eat more and still be ok.
So given the nanny state we live it, I think the risks are probably minute...

Re: tuna in brine
Tuna in oil / tomato is also good - sardines are also good and are higher in protein than tuna -
I have also heard that tomato sauce helps prevent burn patches on the lawn - Apple Cider Vinegar (from health food shop not supermarket) is also used to prevent burn patches when added to food - which happen due to the amount of alkaline in the dogs wee - (used in dogs drinking water) apparently it also helps with flea prevention - good for itching skin etc
