Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
I've started feeding the wee man a few cherry tomatoes, after he plays with them he eats them lol
I've had a wee look on the net and it seems tomato isn't particularly good for dogs. However, in a BARF diet, all the stuff that's bad for dogs (raisins, sultanas, grapes, onion etc) is encouraged not discouraged. Harley does have a wee bit onion, some raisins not often but occasionally and never gives him any ill effect.
Thoughts please?
This is taken from a BARF site recommended by Ian Billinghurst...
'According to Dr. Billinghurst of the BARF Diet, the vegetables and fruit used should be the ones which are most in season. While this raw food diet detox is based on a healthy diet, BARF relies on green leafy vegetables such as silver beet, spinach, celery, one or two members of the cabbage family (cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, etc), herbs (parsley), root vegetables such as carrots and sugar beets or fruit type vegetables (think tomatoes or red and green peppers). All of the vegetables should be raw.'

Pass on that one, I'm sure TracyP posted to say that one of her dogs eats tomatoes straight from the plant in the garden and suffered no ill effects.

i got this quote :-
tomatoes can be fatal to dogs Tomatoes can cause tremors and heart arrhythmias. Tomato plants and the most toxic, but tomatoes themselves are also unsafe. (All parts of the plant except the tomato itself are also poisonous to humans.)

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
I've given Ruby Mackerel and Pilchards in tomato sauce and she's not been bothered by it. In fact a mate of mine recommends pasta in tomato sauce as well. She's also played and then eaten one of the tomatos from our plant in the back yard, so I guess it's due to moderation. Once a week seems to be fine but not a whole tin of tomato soup?

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
Good memory Jo!!!!
MBK,
Jess has eaten them since she was a pup (as did my other dogs) & so does Tyson now & they have never had a health prob with them. They seem to like the cherry one more as they can "pop" them in their mouths for a flavour burst. But they do like sliced tomatoes, peppers we call them capsicums (& jess loves raw chillis) as well as raw mushroom etc. I could go on forever on the fruit & vegis mine eat. & although they DO get some onion in leftover pasta sauce, casserole etc. I never give it to them as a part of their diet & I never give them grapes , sultanas or celery. They dont digest the strings on celery very well. & just as for you, Celery takes 2x as many kilojoules it digest as it gives you so unless you are on a diet. . . not much there in the nutriments really.
This was taken about late 2006 earliy 2007. A bar her now bodgy leg she's in fab health. But I do think it also depends on when you start them on eating many diff things as an older dog may not take to such a varied diet it's not used to.
(This is why I can't find any tomatoes for the salad as she is also smart enough to only pick the ripe ones.)

Side note: I also feed most vegis to them both raw & cooked if it's cold so they can also have a nice warm dinner before bed as well.

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
Great picture Tracy. I'm fairly sure they're fine for dogs anyway. I tend to think a hell of a lot of the scaremongering about feeding dogs certain foods are myth perpetrated by dog food companies.

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
I think sometimes a little knowledge can be a bad thing, when we had Poppy GSD, Rotty X, we had her from a pup she ate whatever was on offer from Pedigree to Bakers to Winalot and she had it with all the table scraps. She had all the bones from meat we cooked like Lamb and if they had chops she had those bones cooked too, only ones she never had was chicken. She was always totally fine never went to the vets other than for her yearly vaccinations and was in fantastic health until suddenly suffering a stroke.
These lot are pampered beyond belief, I never let anything cross their lips that I'm not sure of and although they are all very healthy I do look sometimes and think what am I doing!!!!

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
Tomato leaves, stems and pips are supposedly bad for them. Also take into account that tomatoes were considered poisonous to humans till not to long ago.

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
I agree that dog food companies have alot to answer for. Though there are cert some great foods they produce I do think to some extent they scare people into thinking if they dont feed their dog a commercial food they wont get the nutrients they need to be strong & healthy which just isn't true.
You've got me thinking now & I'm gona start a poll as i think it would be really interesting to see what people feed & if it is a large variety of foods or just commercial food.

Re: Tomatoes good or bad for dogs?
I agree Jo, Look at Charlie, I think she possibly had the worst diet in the world with bakers and then everything she used to steal from the children! She is 14 1/2 now and can still walk miles and is on no medication. Im pretty sure tomatos are fine.
