Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Hey everyone,
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on a good protein for a puppy as well as an adult dog. Also what about puppy vs "all ages" formulas. I just got a small bag of the Artemis medium/large breed puppy. Was originally thinking of getting Taste of the Wild because it's grain free but their kibble is for all ages and not puppy specific, hence the question about puppy vs all ages. Wellness Core is one of my options for when the puppy is over 1 year old as that's what its recommended for.
I am thinking of staying with the Artemis and at 6 months of age move on to the Taste of the Wild and then eventually Wellness Core at over 1 year old. The protein levels are high though.....bad idea? Thoughts?

Where I live, those 3 are the best that I could find. Before I found these locally, I was bringing back bags of Naturapet EVO from Singapore for our other dog.

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Hello
The protein levels in puppy / junior foods will always be high as the youngsters need the extra protein to aid growth.
I've never heard of that food before but they don't look bad
In all honesty though the deciding factor will be with your pup as he'll soon let you know if the food you have chosen is good or not. From my experience its trial and error finding one they will eat
Good luck

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Just be careful with large breed formulas, they are designed for slower growth in mind for large breeds.
A stafford is not a large breed and I feel that the fat content of Artemis and Core is a bit low for a puppy stafford.
The food I use has 34% protein and 19% fat and the first four ingredients are chicken or chicken by products, not grain. This doesnt necessarily mean its a better food, but dogs dont need a high grain food at all.
If you arent sure what to buy, I suggest buying small bags of foods and seeing what your puppy prefers to eat.
Buying dog food can be a veritable minefield as there is so much choice available. Cost doesnt indicate quality levels and its a matter of trial and error at the end of the day.

If I could afford it I would use Orijen which boasts 70% protein and no grains whatsoever.
Dogs need protein all their lives and older dogs certainly shouldnt have low protein foods unless a vet has advised this.
Low protein in adult dogs can lead to muscle loss and a less than healthy dog.

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Pedigree Advance...doubt you have it where you are, its made in Australia.
Ive trialed loads of foods from all over the world but have found that I keep coming back to this one because the dogs EAT it, (some of the foods they wont touch), its digested well, less poo, doesnt cause upset tummies, breaks down well with hot water on it (for really young pups) and is very cost effective compared to other foods.
Some foods Ive used have caused diarrhoea, wind problems(farting), skin problems (scurfing, flaking skin, dull coats), and were generally poorly tolerated.
Every dog is different and its a matter of finding something that suits your pocket and your dog.

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
I feed Ralph Orijen, either the fish 6 or regional red, his coat and general condition are brilliant, he's really nicely toned and never fails to eat every meal, no side effects of the high protien either, I swear by it.

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Orijen is made up of 70% meats and has 42% protein.
I will probably be changing to taste of the wild at 6 months age or so. I originally wanted to get that first but it is an "all ages" kibble and I thought I would start out with a "puppy" specific one first. Will eventually move to wellness core at adult age unless nature's variety is back in stock. Or maybe Artemis Maximal which has 42% protein and 22% fat....too much fat? hmm
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=1730&cat=8
Can't find orijen here but wellness core rates up there with it. As does Naturapet EVO which I used to bring back from Singapore for my pom in small bags. Not looking forward to bringing back large bags for the staffy though.
Hmm now I wonder if I should change to Taste of the Wild which is at 32% protein and 18% fat. Lucky I only bought the small bag of Artemis puppy. Or should I mix both till I use up the Artemis? Now I'm worried the protein or fat is too little for the puppy..... Is it bad to mix foods?

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Or should I try to exchange to the Artemis SMALL breed puppy? I had bought the medium/large because the Stafford is classified as medium so I thought that one is best.... Now I am having doubts...
Sorry for the many questions, just being worried about the puppy.

My 2 both had largebreed puppy food as puppies at one of my vets recommendation. Xan till 18months and Luna till just over a year. I don't think you'll go wrong with feeding the medium/large breed if you feel it's a good food.

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
you can mix foods.
Mine sometimes get a mixture of 4 or 5 foods, especially if they win a bag of something I dont usually use.
Sounds like the Taste of The Wild one is worth a go, has a higher fat and protein content and I would try that for your pup...

Re: Puppy/Dog protein in kibble
Orijen is quite a hard food to get hold of, you'd have to buy it online and get it delivered. Its also fairly expensive to buy in one go its about £50 for 12kg, you do feed less than other foods though so that probably balances out, read some reviews first though as it does affect different dogs in different ways.

You can't really compare Orijen to Wainwrights on either price or quality, where abouts in the country are you ? I have a list of suppliers, you can buy 400g trial bags for between £2.50 and £3.50 depending on flavour, I'm sure your dog will love it
