Re: Need advice on fresh bones
Sorry hun i don't know. I tried to feed raw bones last year and both my guys walked away. Dylan just digs a hole and puts his bone in it for weeks then digs it back up some weeks later so he is banned from bones

I'll rename if for you as you are not on Line. I assumed you were referring to Butchers tinned food when I saw the title

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
I let cassie keep hers for two days, if there is any left I throw it away, if I have more than one I freeze it, I also get the butcher to cut the bones up to a reasonable size.

It's about a day or two then they go off. If you got room put them in the freezer then they will last longer. When the bones smell put them in the bin.

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
I dump their bones after 24 hours, freezing them is fine as long as they're thoroughly defrosted before giving them to your dogs, you should also ask your butcher for cow rib bones and not weight bearing bones as the splinter!

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
I give mine a bone in the morning and they are allowed to keep it until bed time, then its binned. Our butcher freezes ours and we pick them up they go straight in the freezer and then defrosted overnight.

I also get me butcher to chop them up so they can have one & I freeze the others for later. I only let them have them for 1day in summer & 2 days in winter before they go in the bin.

Ruby's had one now for a week so it's time it was binned. She won't get one for another couple of weeks. The only disadvantage I find is that it gives her slight diahorrea - ugh!

WOW! I don't take Kuta's off him at all. I give him a bone and it will be in circulation for weeks until I can no longer see it laying around. I'm sure in the wild they don't have a human to come and take it off them after 2 days when its smelly.

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
Sorry just seen this post.
Right I've found Harley isn't a huge fan of raw bones until they start oxidising a little. So he'll generally not touch them until they've been out the freezer for 4-5 hours. Personally I'll ditch the remains after a full 24 hours of exposure, a large bone like a cow's rib is generally eaten in 3-4 hours anyway with Harley.

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
Another point is when the bone is fresh it's more pliable and 'soft', when it's harder after a few days a bone has the tendency to splinter and leave jagged edges and loses more of it's nutritional goodness.

Re: Need advice on fresh bones
So long as the meat has been removed within couple of days they can keep it for as long as they like.
in the wild, (as with my dogs) there would only be flesh on the bones for a few hours, so wouldnt have that issue, plus wild dog's digestive systems and acidity levels would be quite different to domestic dogs

Good advice Tracy. If the bone is too big to be eaten fairly quickly either get the Butcher to chop it up or do it at home with a knife or cleaver.

A dog's digestive system is virtually exactly the same and has remained the same as a feral wolf. The point to me in feeding raw meaty bones is that the whole bone is eaten, not just the meat. I've found that the bone becomes more brittle the longer it's around for and so I bin the bone after 24 hours, it's not worth the risk IMO.
