is it ok to change food?

Post by mel86 on Thu 22 Oct 2009, 19:18

I've just been reading the topic on windy staffies.....Toby was on Wagg puppy food when we first had him but had terrible wind so changed him to JWB which is slightly better but still has bad wind at times. Do you think its ok to change his food again?

Also hes coming up to 6 months old now and booked in to be 'done' next week they told me their matabalisum (sp?) slows down afterwards. dont know whether to start feeding him twice a day and swop to adult food?

i've read somewhere that dogs tend to let you know which meal time they arent so bothered about but toby wud happily eat all day everyday and shows no sign of giving 1 up!

Hello

I have to say i have changed food more times than i care to remember none of my dogs care.

With him being done yes their metabolisam does change but this i would say is dog specific so as to how much he changes you won't know until after he ias castrated.

Thats said he is still young and he is still growing so i would stick to a well balanced diet for a dog of his age to ensure he gets everthing he needs.

I will say i swapped my dogs at 6 months to twice a day but that was just me, it suited my dogs and me just fine. I ntroduced adult food with Dylan at a year old, Charlie had it at 6 months as did Indi and i can't see any difference in any of them, so i would say the choice is yours.

Mine all moved onto adult food after being spayed or neutered at the advice of the vet. I have also tried about a million brands of food and mine are all ok!

I've also tried many different foods to find one that works. Just phase the new one in before the old one is finished. You can change his food to adult or leave him on puppy till you see him actually gaining some weight. Just keep a close eye on him.

i was thinking of asking the vet whether to change to adult food but thought i'd see wot you all did with ur dogs. i was thinking of changing to wainwrights was i can get that easily from asda where as atm i have to go to our local pet store or hooties to get his JWB......is that lazyness?

Anyway thanks 4 ur advise......pondering now wot to do as it seems i can do either.

As for changing to 2 meals a day i was thinking of doing it gradually......slowly reducing his dinner time meal and slowly increasing his tea time meal until hes just having 2 meals per day
