A word of caution about raw bones

Post by My Bully's Keeper on Wed 21 Oct 2009, 09:20

Harley threw up this morning a piece of undigested bone. It wasn't jagged but sometimes he will pull off part of a bone which is.

If you're going to feed raw bones please make sure you supervise your dog at all times and remove from them any fragments of bone they chew off in large chunks.

Good point MBK. I always watch when mine have them & never leave them outside for too long when it's too hot as wasps love raw meat / bones & they could also get stung if they get in them & the dogs dont know.

I think thats one of the reasons to not feed weight bearing bones - because they tend to break into splinters where as ribs etc are more crumbly. If that makes sense.

Great advice Markey - to be honest I know BARF is a diet for dogs - but some people mis interperut which bones to feed -

After speaking with my vet about raw & barf - we went for Raw as she wasn't keen on the Bone part of the diet - due to the number of operations they carry out due to owners lack of knowledge when using BARF.

We also used to buy bones from our training class but stopped that too as I was unsure if they were the correct kind of bone.

So they now enjoy delicious Kong treats x just piece of mind for us Smile

Cow ribs split and splinter too. Harley's had two the past two days and he left a very sharp stump both times. I've found the longer you leave them the more brittle they become.

You could be completely right - mine don't get bones because of the Mustard Gas that comes out the other end.

I'm not quite sure where this non-weight bearing bone thing comes from. A cow's leg bone or sheep's leg bone will of carried a hell of a lot more weight than a chickens.
