yes i have done , but dont like to and with a hard butt like that i dont think he feels a thing , when he grabbed my bunny it was a reaction thing , a clap of the hands and a stern enough is just as good , he still loves me and i love him

At this point in time that would be totally uneccesary for me - Inca has been trained well enough that a very stern "no" is enough to stop her doing anything.

If she has been very naughty I give her a little scruff shake which is rare anyway.

It is not a good idea to ever tap your dog on the nose as they could begin to have negative associations to hands which leads to many problems. And a tap on the rump is totally ineffective on a dog suh as a staffordshire.

No, I dont need to with mine. All they need is a stern "No or Oye" & they stop. It's not nice when mum grumps at them & if they are really naughty they go outside on their own for 10 - 30 mins depending on their age & what they did.

I have nothing against a little tap to get their attention.
But I think Bronx would die if I smacked him.
Iv'e said before on the forum, he punishes himself more than I ever could. He turns himself inside out if he thinks he's been bad.
"NO" is enough to have him flee the room. Don't know why he is like it, cos I don't ever remember even smacking him as a pup.

In the odd occasion I give a little jab with my hand, moreso to get her to focus on me if she is playing up.

Jazz pretends I smack her. Sometimes when I tell her off she flinches like I am going to smack her, she sulks for the most part of the day whe I growl at her. She is the biggest sook.

Bodhi is a whirlwind and I have had to be much sterner with him compared to Jazz when she was a pup, although when I growl at him he is over it in seconds.

Re: Slap Your Dog?

Post by barney's mom on Wed 14 Oct 2009, 22:51

Barney is so ultra-sensitive, that if I even say no, I have to say it nicely (such as "no, sweet thing"), or he would run into his crate, mopes for hours, and wears his feelings on his sleeve. I've never had a dog that was so 'good'; other than jumping on me (which I am still working on but have made significant progress), he doesn't do anything that requires correction. If he is sticking his nose where it doesn't belong, an 'uh-uh' is all it takes. We actually have to be consciously aware to be gentle in our tone with him as he takes it seriously if he thinks he has been bad. Good thing my husband and I don't yell and argue with one another, because I don't think Barney is the sort that could live in that environment!

Mine have had the odd tap but for some reason have the fear of death in them for a wooden spoon?? Whats funniest is that I have bamboo ones that are so thin and flimsy if I ever tried hitting them with it, it'll probably shatter in my hand. If they misbehave or play gets to ruff I only have to say uh-uh and thats it. Sometimes I'll give them a pinch in the neck - far more effective - as thats doggie language for don't do that.

Yes i have

Charlie got a smack when we were training ata gaility and she got so wound up she was barking like a nutter at me and managed to jump up and bark but caught my leg with her teeth. It hurtie hell, the bruise was huge and yes she got a smack for it.

Indi got a smack when i bent down to pick up the ball bag to but his small boomer ball in it and he jumped up and head butted me so hard that i managed to bite my lip all the way through. I can't tell you how many starts i saw but there were loads not to mention blood every where. So yes he got a smack for that.

Dylan has had the odd smack but for the life of me i can't think why at the moment.

I don't thinki am wrong in what i have done. I don't make a habbit of it and it might only happen once in a blue moon but yes i am not ashamed to say i have smacked my dogs.

[I think you ned to have serious words with your OH peeing on the bed ]

On a more serious note I think I would feel too guilty if I smacked Diesel, even if I say 'Bad boy/naughty boy' he starts to nudge me as if to say sorry whilst wagging his tail.

A firm uh-uh normally saves both our feelings and we know that enough is enough by that stage.

I have never smacked Alfie, I don't think I ever could. When he is naughty, or cheeky, it just makes me want to laugh, he is just so totally cute! I do teach him boundaries though, and he does get a told 'no' if he is up to mischief. If that doesn't work then time out for a minute or two usually does the trick.
