I walk Harley 15 minutes in the morning, then again in the evening, he also does a lot of charging about the house and the garden through the day.

I take our lot out twice per day come rain, snow or sunshine!
Guess on average it works out to about 1 1/2 hours per day.

Damn! I've only just heard about this 5-min rule.
I've been taking mine out for 2 30 min walks per day and he loves it. Just last night I had him out for about 45, including a brief jog along the playing fields.
He seems fine too. Hard to believe I'm doing him harm. So I really want to limit this to 15 mins??? He'll be unbearable at home if I do that

If he is unbarable at home - mental stimulation is the answer! 15 mins of training etc is as good as an hours exercise. Hide toys in the garden, make him find them, there are so many games you can play with your dog which will wear him out mentally.
I have heard and seen so many stories of people over exercising their pups and at two need operations to put joint problems right.

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
So Sylar is just over 3 months right now that's 15mins. Is this 15mins per day or per walk?
Is it okay to go out for 2 or 3 15 min walks per day or would that have to be 2 7 min or 3 5 min walks?
I'm glad I don't anthropomorphise my animals otherwise Sylar would be very upset over this sudden restriction in basic exercise privileges

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
I would do two 15 mins per day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon or evening which ever is best for you. Walking on grass is best as it is softer on their joints. By all means go out for half hour, but only have him walking for 15 mins, if that makes sense.
I just think it's better to be safe than sorry and when he is a year and his growth plates have fused, start increasing the exercise, then you can walk for as long as you like.
Some people think the 5mins per month rule is a load of rubbish, maybe their dogs have just been lucky, but I know I wouldn't risk it with mine as I have seen the results.

When Harley was really young, I walked him 10 minutes twice a day with free roaming. He's now nearly 6 months, so I walk him 20-25 minutes twice a day with free roaming too.

Mojo is walked 3 times a day.
I walk him twice a day at midday and in the evening.
My brother works nights, so he walks him early in the morning when he gets home.

My dogs go on both morning and afternoon school runs, which are one and a half hour round trips. Plus they sometimes go to the local shop now and then. Finding it harder tho in this weather as i've had to change my school after noon runs to later on,due to it being too hot for the dogs!

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
Hello
Sorry if this seems like I am harping on but I am a great beliver in making sure your pooch is walked every day and a routnie is established - I am shocked when I hear people telling me they only take their dog out on a weekend and then complain it destroys the house when they are at work - what do you reply to that?? Some people eh !! - lol
Anyway - we both work full time and this is our routine - we take it in turns
We walk Diesel & Rocco
every morning @ 5am for 1 hour (even Saturday & Sunday lol)
Every Lunch Time - 20 mins
Every Evening @ 5.30pm for min 45 mins to max 1 hour
We are quite fortunate as our garden backs onto many acres of open farmland - so the walks are varied each day - lots of lovely smells to track and even roll in - Well Diesel & Rocco believe they are lovely smells - we aren't that keen.
No wonder I have no energy for the gym and cardio
lol

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
We have a neighbour with a Golden Lab puppy...
They bought it a couple of months after my mate bought his Black Lab. (Think maybe they thought his was cute, so they wanted one too)
We have seen it out twice !
Last time I spoke to her and fussed the pup, and she was telling me how he is sooo bad, he is uncontrolable, and chews and isnt house trained etc.
I tried very politely tried to say he needs a lot of walking and he will be fine.
And I was gob-smacked when she snaps - When are we suposed to do that? My husband works full time, and I have to look after the kids?
I wanted to give her a slap and say - same as I do and every one else in our road 6:00 am before we go to work. Cos her husband goes out the same time as us, and we all manage it. (we have quite a good laff on in our dog walking club)
But unfortunately you cant talk to some people.
I heard yesterday, she has tried to take it back to the breeder, who doesn't want to know, and she won't take it to a rescue - cos they won't pay her enough.. ! Basically , she wants her £500 back for a seven month old untrained dog.
Even asked my mate if he would ask at the dog training class if anyone wants it.
Quite rightly , he pointed out they all have dogs... that is why they are at the training class...
That poor dog eh?

Hi Markey
I think you do extremley well to not slap her - I don't think I could have restrained myself - I know this sounds awful - but that pooch should be taken off her and re homed to someone who can provide the care and dedication an animal needs - poor little thing must be going crazy stuck in house all day.
These kind of people should be placed on a list and should never be allowed to own a dog again
Sorry to go on - but it really get me mad when humans treat a animal with no respect or regard to their needs -
Next time - she decides to moan you should say that the dog deserves someone who can care for it properly and she should find a new home for it! I am pleased she doesn't live near me lol
Phew - glad I got that off my chest - Suzie T
calm has now restored

Totally agree, problem is , I'm sure he is well cared for after a fashion..
But we all know on here, that a happy dog is well trained and exercised etc.
But I'm sure she is not breaking any laws, just making herself and the dog miserable.
I'm sure she is not bad , just totally ignorant and thoughtless.
Unfortunately this is the result of buying a cute puppy on a whim.
Just hope it goes to an owner who will work hard to bring it back up to scratch.
Though all to often in cases like this things don't work out so well.

She loves walks but they really have started to tire her out. Luckily where I live means we dont have walk far to find a decent place so we can just a slow walk and then let her explore a bit. Took her across the field today and I think she will need to sleep untill the morning now lol

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
Hi Markey
I am sure the pup is cared for at home - but I can't see how the poor dog can be happy - I just went off on one as it really upsets me when people think they can just buy a pup - and not take it for walks etc ..
Sorry to have gone off on one - I am sure she is a lovely person but there isn't any excuse for not exercising your dog. I really didn't mean to cause you or your neighbour any offence.
This makes me smile - each morning on the way to work I pass 2 dog owners who are disabled - both in motorised wheel chairs and every day (rain or not) they are out with thier pooch - the lead is tied to the arm rest and they trot along very happy - how cool is that

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
Lots of people buy dogs, many with the best intentions but only some actually follow through and learn about the animal and what's involved in looking after it. Sad but true. I wish I had a quid for every time I've been in some (perfectly nice) persons house and heard the big story about how their dog is some special kind of monster and won't take a telling and chews everything and "misbehaves" and I'm thinking all it needs is some excercise and some discipline.
Unfortunately the owners aren't as easy to convince as the dogs. What can you do?

My neighbours are the same. They got rid of their black lab who was about 8mths (I think) they never used to walk it.
The bloke came back with a lab puppy the other day....
Makes me so mad

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
And this is what walks are all about
it's the usual 6 am morning walk.
The 2 gay boys (Bronx and
Monty) have stolen Lucy's ball. But it gets taken off the little
beggers, so they have to play with a plastic bottle they found.

3 times a day for my 3.
I take all 3 together, then drop Holly and Sam off and take April out for a longer walk as she only young and has more energy than my oldies

Re: How often do you take your dog on walks?
Ruby normally gets a 20-30 min walk about 11ish and then about 45mins early evening both times are on & off lead lots of running about. Then about 9ish at night she gets a walk about the houses on hard surface for her nails and to do toilet before bedtime. She also has loads of playtime in the garden throughout the day.

A 2 hour long walk by my dad at 2 in the morning, a hour long walk in the afternoon in the holidays by me, my mom or my dad, in school time by my dad, and a half an hour walk in the evening by me and my mom.
