How long is your dog alone for?
Hi all, just interested ('cause I'm slightly voyueristic...) how long on average your dogs are alone for, per day, or even per week?
Also curious as to what kind of environment they are left in, i.e, crate, room, house, outside.
We have odd hours here but it ensures that Inca is rarely by herself... she doesn't seem to have any problems when she does have to be alone so thats good, but she's not very good at playing solo.

Re: How long is your dog alone for?
I live about 1.5hrs drive out of melb & work near the city so my two can be on their own for anywhere between 6-11 hrs or not at all depending on what my workload is or if I work from home. They deal with it quite well but are always excited when I get home even if I've only been gone 15 mins.

I don't work so they are rarely left alone. When we go on holidays, Jazz has come with us - except for Fiji and she went in kennels then. Once, my 19yo nephew looked after her while we went away for 4 days and she escaped and was missing for a week so from now on it is holidays they are dog friendly

Re: How long is your dog alone for?
Oh Robyn, that must of been heart stopping - four days of heart stopping!
Answering my own question - if Inca gets left during the day she gets the run of my large front sunroom, maximum time that she has been alone there is around 5 hours. But this is not a usual occurance maybe once or twice a week - she usually gets carted around in the car, but as the weather is warming we won't be able to leave her in the car any more.
When we go out at night we just pop her in her crate as thats where she would be sleeping anyway, except that the door gets closed. She may be left for around eight hours but it's all sleepy-time so I don't worry at all.

Re: How long is your dog alone for?
Mine get left for about an hour each morning whilst I do the school run, and if I need shopping this gets extended to 2 hours. They get left for 15 minutes in an afternoon to do the school run (I only fetch the little one the big 3 get the school bus back). The most they get left is probably 4 hours if that and that would be once a week whilst I clean my Nans house.
Whenever they get left they all go into seperate cages and the doors are shut, the cage doors are shut at night too.

Who got to make that decision?
Or does Shadow just naturally take to the crate more often?

Very rarely left at all, he goes with us most of the time, does the school run, visits relatives etc. If he is ever left it's for no more than an hour.

thats awesome - whenever I get my coat, Inca sits and waits for her collar to be put on... the longer this takes (or, forbid, that it never happens) the sadder and sadder she looks.

Re: How long is your dog alone for?
We have four adults in our household (me, my husband and two adult children) so Alf is not often on his own. My husband works from home on mon and fri, he is off weekends. I work full time shiftwork so am home either all morning or afternoon/evening. Kids are at college/work so come and go at different times. The days he is likely to be left are tue, wed occasional thurs for six hours at the most. I have to say I HATE it when he is left but I think I suffer more than he does because he just sleeps. I always take him for a good walk before he is left and he knows the routine. When he sees me preparing for work after his walk, he goes into his crate without being asked (usually with a big sigh
).

they are alone for 4-5 hours free roam. The bathroom and bedroom are blocked off by the baby gate so that Cleo can get away if she wants a break from them. I don't see the point of having a pit bull in a crate.

Re: How long is your dog alone for?
Living on my own and working full time mine do get left for 5 hours in the am then a half hour walk at lunch time and then left again for 41/2 hours till i finish work.
My dogs are seperated by a dog gate with Dylan having the living room and half the hall way to himself. Charlie and Indi share the rest of the hallway, kitchen and bedroom.
I find the key to leaving dogs is routine. As long as the same procedures are put in place each time and the dogs know what is happening then they are fine. My dogs like Emma's know week days i go to work so automatically seperate themselves to their beds prior to me leaving.

I work full time now and bubbles is left in the house for 8 hours a day 4 days a week, if my OH is not busy at work. He is starting to take him to work with him so soon he will be with my OH at work. I can't really take him to the hairdresser at work. I think the client's will love him.

Patch is left in his crate from about 7am-11am then he is out for about 30-40mins and then in his crate again from roughly 11:50/12pm - 4:30ish and he has been dry since doing this two weeks ago. He gets a walk in the morning, at lunch, when i get back from work and at night.

I've always thought that a well behaved dog would do much less damage in a shop than any child!

On average, Barney is never alone since my husband is home. They are such spoiled dudes!
But if he runs errands, Barney might be alone for 2-3 hours or so. On rare occasions, from about 9 am to 4 pm. If we are gone for any amount of time longer than 3 minutes, Barney can be found and heard snooring on our bed, head against our pillows, drooling on our fresh linens. He never even hears us come in.

Left alone (with each other) for 4 hours in the morning & 3 hours in the afternoon (Mon - Fri). I have an hour with them at lunch time.
Buster quite often comes to work with me; he is in fact asleep at my feet as I type this.
Millie sleeps most of the day anyway.

Luckily someone is normally always home as my husband works from home. If we do leave him he goes in his crate which is only for 30 mins to 2 hours max. On a monthly basis we do a big shop in the city and leave him for around 6 hours in which case we give him the run of the hall and kitchen.
We did leave him to roam the house once but he ate the sofa and did unquestionable things with my Pumba teddy bear.

At the moment Kev works nights, so when he gets in, I go to work...so they are very rarely left.
On days off, they tend to come with us if out visiting family etc - but of we go and do they shopping Dixie is in the bedroom with a stairgate and Rocco has the run of the rest of the flat.
When Kev joins the marines - I will have to rethink what I am going to do with the dogs - I would like to buy a house closer to work, so I can pop home on my lunch break. I leave the house at 7.30am and get home about 5.30pm so it is too long for them to be left...
