dog left by itself! (debate)
How long do you think dogs should be left on their own. I know someone who leaves their dog for 12 hours each day. Do you think this is OK.

Five and half hours is the longest we have left TJ....In on his own...
We always take him out for a long walk before we go then he will sleep the duration we are out..
Its all down to shift pattens this week he will not be on his own for a minute..Next week will be the same..
We only have this problem when me and my wife are on 6-2 shift.. one week in six
Then my son will take him out before he goes to school at 8.30...

A lot depends on the dog, many Lurchers and Greyhounds are happy to be left as long as they have a comfy sofa to sleep on.
12 hours is too long to leave a dog though, dogs are pack animals and need company, if they don't get it, it can cause many problems.

Hi dogthedog..
I leave my dog alone from 8am-6pm every weekday because my partner and i both work full time and he seems to be fine. He is kept inside but does have access to the backyard so he can run around and go to the toilet whenever he needs to.
I guess it all depends on how much room you have. It wouldnt be fair to lock him up in a confined space for that long but if you have a backyard and an indoor area for your dog to be in, then i think its ok.
Hope that helps

IMO 12 hours is far to long to leave your dog without anyone coming in to (a) let them out to go to the loo (b) make sure they are ok and maybe take them for a walk (c) make sure they have a fresh water supply.
The longest we have left our dogs is approx 5 hours we always make sure they have a long simulating walk beforehand and they have a frozen filled kong too - if we were going to be away any longer then we are quite lucky in a way that my MIL lives next door and she would see to them.
If you are going to be away 12 hours then either have someone come in daily whether it be a neighbour or a dog sitter to let it out for the toilet and even a short walk otherwise I just dont think its fair on the dog.

Before I go to work I walk with him for about half an hour and then I he's left alone for about 5 hours. When I come home I go for another walk and if I have the time I go for about one hour. Once we were out and we left him for about 8 hours and it didn't feel good that I left him so long. But I think he slept all the time, because my furniture looked allright and he didn't left a surprise for me.
But mostly I leave him for 5 or 5,5 hours alone. That's the max.

Re: dog left by itself! (debate)
I'm a quite fortunate as i work from home (not that i get much work done with my 2 loving me up all day
) but when i do go out i try to make it for not more than 4 hours. If i do have to be out longer than that i take them out for a 40 minute walk, then hopefully they will sleep the first hour away. Then i get my local petsitting company to come round for a home visit. This takes care of all there immediate needs (toilet, drink, stretch etc) and helps break the day up for them.
When i first contacted tham and told them i has 2 staffies they were a bit wary... now they ask me if they can take them for a walk even if i'm at home... people huh! lol
