Newbie: Is it OK for astaffy to bark when playing

Post by staffyruby on Mon 14 Apr 2008 - 11:31

had my little girl for 2 3 days now.

Its only today that she will play with her toys. I gt her a rope with a ball at the end and she loved it. she wanted me to tug as well. Well I played nd managed to grab the rope out of her mouth.

Ruby started to follow it and started to Bark. (never heard her bark before). is this OK? Was she telling me she was happy or was she barking out of aggression and wanting me to give it back?

As you can tell from this question I am a complete newbie

Barking is communication, it can mean so many things, watch their body language when they are barking and it will tell you why.

Yea its all normal, the only time enzo ever barks is when im playing with his tug toys with him. If he wants me to play with him he will stand in front of me with his toy in his mouth and nod his head lol.

Update Ruby still barks. As soon as I let her of the lead she will run a few yeard and then return looking at me and start barking. Not afraid anymore just ignore her. But would love to know what she wants.

Have a horrible suspecion its treats as she quietens down when they are given for about 10 mins.

Hi staffyruby, its more than likely she is after treats lol
I would try swapping her treats for another such as a ball/frisbie
as a reward, only give them when she stops barking, ignore her barking, turn your back to her if she persists, she will soon get the message, and reward with ball/frisbie as soon as she stops. winking

Today when taking Ruby for a walk and she started barking i turned around and ignord. She stopped, After a few seconds I turned around. After a while she got the message and stopped barking.

Also i'm teaching Ruby fetch and it seems to be working. Majority of the time she will retreive it.

When Rosie is having lots of fun - she makes the strangest sounds i have ever heard, a sort of cross between a cat miawing, a howl and a bark, we call it her 'singing'. She can be quite a vocal dog!
