I agree with Hardtrackz Terry, some dogs arent tollerant of wheat, also there is salt in it which can damage a dogs liver.

Dogs are designed to eat meat not grains, weetabix isn't suitable for them and milk on makes it worse.

well when I first got my pup at 8 weeks I gave her one weetabix with some puppy milk & water in the morning but I've stopped now,it didnt do her no harm though.

yes dogs aren't designed to eat grains or cereal,so whats the first ingredient in most dog food dry or wet,yep you guessed it grains & cereals.

I used to feed my dogs Weetabix at one time until I found out about nuitrition for dogs. I went into it more when Joe started to get a reaction to a dog food he had seemed to be doing well on for some time, they had changed it. Joe has a lot of allergies to various grains now, and the only food he can eat is Burgess Sensitive. This is white rice and lamb, really good for sensitive tummies.

I always look at the ingredients when getting dog food, the more ingredients the worse the food probably is. Dogs are like children, many react to some additives and become hyper active.

i have been given conflicting advice then reguaring the weetabix
read on another forum to give the puppy weetabix in the morning as a first meal
we have been giving it to her with puppy milk
what is a suitable alternative for a puppy as we did not want to solely give her dried food 3-4 times a day
i would not like it and i am sure she will not
any advice greatfully recieved

Hi Terry, try natural plain yogurt on the complete dry food, mine love it. I also used to give them naughty things like rice pudding when they were small lol and Scrambled eggs, rice etc Readybrek is made from oats and has a lower salt content 0.10 per 100g (weetabix is 0.65 per 100g,) but i have never given mine either of them. I do the naughty i suppose as i always mix other things in with their complete dry such as tinned tuna, cooked chicken with a bit of its stock, cooked liver chopped up to small peices and mix it in and cooked rice and pasta. It gives it a bit of flavour for them. Introduce things slowly to a pup and small amounts till they are used to them.(to avoid upset tums) Hope any of this helps :-bd

Thats good Tel :-bd used to give it mine, as you know always make sure theres plenty of fresh water with it. I used feed mine every four hours, which is usually about 4meals a day. I also gave them puppy markies as treats, and the stuff i posted above. I believe put as much goodness into em as you can when they are pups and they should turn out ok. Keep us updated with the pics Smile

I always add things to my dogs dry food, tuna, sardines, mackeral, vegetables, fruit etc.

Most dogs love porridge, mine do, and it is easy to make with oats and water in the microwave. Also if you make it yourself you know what is in it, no addives.

pups are often weaned onto solids using weetabix as its soft but i wouldn't advice any pup old enough to be in its new home it hun.

I top up my dogs complete dry food with Raw mince you can buy frozen from the pet shop, cooked pasta, raw vedgetables (brocoli + carrot) + raw bones from the butchers.

Every so often they get a tin of tuna in sunflower oil too which is good for their coats + i used to give egg but mine turn their noses up at it now.

Personally i try to stay away from any human food where all of my dogs are concerned, there is far too much salt in our food and thats no good at all for dogs, even my children know not to feed the dogs any human crap. same for mormal cows milk also, i know goats milk is supposed to be alright though.

dogs are omnivores.

which means they eat meat & plants but do very poorly if fed a constant diet of one or the other. dogs in the wild are pretty much scavengers. should they make a fresh kill they eat the stomach & its contents first, usually full on vegetation. including grains.

most high end kibbles are good enough just by themselves, all a dog needs really... but i mix in other stuff like hard boiled eggs, mashed, shells & all...sardines, cheese, pasta, vegetable oil. i also give them leftovers, but avoided onion & garlic.
they love spag bol & pizza for e.g.

i feed my puppies weetbix mixed with boiled mince when i am weaning them. with no ill effects. at around about seven weeks i replace the weetbix with puppy kibble.

chicken necks are good for growing puppies to chew on. just keep an eye on them & make sure they do chew them rather than trying to bolt them down whole.

my dogs have eaten just about everything that is supposed to be harmful.

they have raided the pantry & pigged out on chocky bikkies, we have a few grape vines around the place & i have caught them eating grapes. they love an eggnog.

some dogs could suffer serious side effects from eating certain foods. a lot of dogs are lactose intolerant for example & i have read where a couple of raisins all most proved fatal for one dog.

Also, don't stop your dog from eating grass. Some people think it gives them a bad stomach but it is good for them. In the wild they would have roughage from a raw carcage to help them eliminate. The grass serves this purpose.
