What age for microchipping?

Just a quick question, Jasper is just over 8 weeks old and I was wondering what the general opinion is of when I should get him chipped? Spoke with the nurse at the vets and she said when he is a bit bigger as the needle is quite big and it might hurt him but what age do ou guys think?

Just as an update he is settling in really well. His first night at home was Saturday and he cried in his crate for a short time when he was put to bed but soon stopped and last night there was no crying at all!!!!!

I think different vets seem to have differemnt opinions on when they will do the microchipping. Mine did it when Bo had her first vaccination, she was fine and didn't make a sound.

It seems like he is settling in well, just one night of crying is really good going.

Of my three dogs

Charlie was done at 6 weeks
Dyan was done at 8 weeks
Indi was done at 6 weeks

I know what the vet is saying as the needle is pretty big. IMO i would have your pup done as soon as possible .

my vets microchipped Cairo at 10 weeks with her second injections.the sooner the better.Cairo wasnt fussed by the needle at all.I remember the vet putting a few biscuits down on the table for her whle she did it and there wasnt a peep out of her

both mine were micro chipped at 10 weeks at their second set of vacs x

Toby has only just been microchipped at 6 months old, same time as being neutered.....to be honest the vet didnt really offer it to me until then

Glad to hear jasper is settling in so well paula. I asked that same question a couple of weeks back, Most people say the sooner the better. I asked the vet at kai first jabs (he was 8 weeks then) & the vet said he liked to do them with the second jab.So kai will be having 2nd jab and getting chipped on thursday. I am a right wuss with pain, So was worried about how he would react but after seeing kai not bother one little bit with the first jab.I am not so worried about the chipping and 2nd jab.

Trouble was done at 9 weeks to me the earlier the better even if it hurt for that second ,

I would say as soon as possible, should he ever get out and god forbid go missing he can be scanned by any vets / dog warden etc.

I would recomend getting it done asap - it amazes me the amount of young dogs that come into rescue that haven't been chipped!

Will def get him done soon. He is due his second jab in a couple of weeks at the vets the breeder uses. We use a different one closer to home so will take him there probably the week after. Thanks for the advice!!!

I would wait till 10 weeks, but not any longer. When i have puppies I get the owner to do it at second injection or I do it myself if the pups are over 10weeks.

Brando just got her's on Tuesday along with her 2nd jab (10 weeks).

The jabs didn't bother her at all, but I gotta admit she did yelp with the microchipping and it bled also.

She got over it quickly enough though, as with all Staffs, she's a hardy little girl!

Jasper had his second jab and his micro chip this week. He yelped a bit at the chip but was then ok, better than Mum who couldn't bear to look after I saw the size of the needle!!!!

Hi Paula. The needle is rather large.Kai was not bothered about it but i was gutted to think that massive needle was going in him.Glad it all went well for yr pup even if you were not impressed lol

But a moment of pain for a lifetime of security. It's a VERY important thing to do for your pup. Tyson was done at about 7wks.

All ours were done with their second jabs too!!
