Puppies and worms

Post by kara on Fri 09 Oct 2009, 21:54

hi ,I only joined yesterday, but i have a question as im worried about my pup,Yesterday i took kai who is 6 weeks 3 days to vet, just to have a check as i was worried because he was the smallest of his litter, The vet asked if he had been wormed & i had to admit,i didnt know.Anyway got a deworming tablet from vet and gave kai it this morning, he spat it out alot and i thought he had not really had any of it, but within 4 hours he had done a poop with 2 large dead white worms ( spagetti like) , Later on he did another again with a couple of what looked like dead worms. but about 20 min ago he started dragging his bum along floor. then did 4 little poops, The first 2 did not look like there were any worms, but the last 2 did have worms & this time they looked alive, So im wondering should they be dead & does kye need to see a vet over the week end because they looked alive, Also usually at this time he has a mad 5 min & tonight he just laid in his bed. I realise that i cant really know his routine as i have only had him a short time, but with the worms & him been very quiet im worried
Also i know he should have had a dewormer every 2 weeks from birth, but i think that maybe he had not had any given. Any advice would be appreciated, love kara & kai

They are round worms very common in puppies, I would ring your vet and say that some of the worms were still live when he passed them and ask for some advice, especially as you think he did not have the whole tablet, tell your vet this too, he may feel a little subdued because he has been wormed, but once he is clear of them he will soon be on top form

Firstly cheers for the very quick reply allie, My first thought was he must have got enough down him because he started passing worms in his poop & to be honest he didnt seem bothered by that, but the time the live ones came out. he was really dragging his little bottom along the floor,He really did not look very happy. I know i probably sound like a neurotic new mother (to a child) but he is my first ever puppy & i want him to be happy & healthy. Anyways cheers again

Ask away! We all do. Tis always better than not knowing I think.
Worms are very common in pups & dragging their bottom on the floor is a classic symptom. If he didnt have a full tablet I'd redose or 1/2 redose as you really cant overdose on worming tabs & they are prob still alive as he didnt get a full dose. If he dosent like the tablet, squish it up into a fine powder between 2 spoons & put it in a bowl with something yummy, (2 sardines for e.g) & mush it all up together. It's now a yummy treat instead of a yucky pill that tastes blah! Or you could try the chewable ones that are supposed to taste nice to them. Mine love the chewable ones.

Can wait to see a piccy of you bub.

Re: Puppies and worms

Post by watts1974 on Sat 10 Oct 2009, 07:59

Many moons ago we had a puppy from a dogs home, (sadly she is no longer with us we lost her last year) I bought her home, got everything together we needed - my first dog owned by me rather than a family pet - wormed her and got up the next day to find the kitchen covered in what looked like wet spaghetti. I was a little shocked to say the least but extra worming tablets from the vet soon cleared her up and she never had them again. Vader was also full of worms and he had extra worming tablets straight away to sort him out!

Thanks for that watts1974. i know it sounds mad but i felt real guilty when i saw them & the fact he was dragging his little bum up and down kitchen floor, made me feel worse,
Well i have rung the vets & he has adviced getting another tablet,So have sent my other half upto the vets.So will try a differnt way of getting the tablet down him, because i really struggled with that yesterday,Can any one tell me how long he is likely to poop worms & is it bad, that they seem to be alive..Thanks again for all the stories and reasurring words, It really helps..

It depends on how bad the infestation is and its not your fault the breeder should have wormed them before they left him!

I assume he is having the tablet form again? Break it into 2 or 3 pieces and squish each piece into a small piece of cheese. Give him a normal piece of cheese first to get the taste and when he goes yum yum give him the squished in tablet cheese easy peasy

The cheese trick worked well, Thanks for the tip
Usually kai gets up to play about 9.30 & is up for about 45 mins, but today he is just sleeping & sleeping,He got up and had a tiny bit of food and a drink, Then had the tablet, but went straight back to sleep, I hope this is due to been dewormed & nothing else,
My other half and kids say im finding things to worry about, but i really cant help it.Were other people like this when they got there first puppy

Oh yes, I worried lots with my 1st pup. After that I worried less & less with ea one. It's because you care that you worry, & how could you not care about your puppy?

Glad that you're getting the worming thing sorted out Smile

Don't worry too much about all the sleeping - at that young an age they should sleep for around 20 hours per day!

Re: Puppies and worms

Post by suzieT on Sat 10 Oct 2009, 14:13

Hi

I have been in a similar situation with Rocco - he got worms when we brought him poor sad

When he pooped they were alive and wriggling - very gross sad

So we took him to vets who gave him worming tabs - after trying to get him to eat them - I pushed it into a piece of chicken and he ate it - yipeee

Anyway .. he did still have worms in his poop for approx 2 days afer the tablet - the 1st few poops they were wriggling a little - but a good few hours later they came out dead -

I suppose it depends how many he has at the time - but again if you are still seeing live worms after a few days give your vet a quick ring.

After about 3 days Rocco was back to his normal self and free of worms - poor little fella Smile

i find that an easy way to give your pup a worming tablet too, is to put in the mouth hold nose and jaw together and rub throat, the dog then has no choice but to swallow. yours might be ok fireball, he might not have worms, just they do need worming all time,so they dont get them, good luck!!
