Poo Problem

Post by ahnji on Sat 07 Nov 2009, 12:50

This is totally my fault, but I don't know how to fix it.

When I first got Brando she remained on the Breeders diet of premium tinned puppy food mixed with Iams. I only wanted her to have dry food, so when the Iams ran out I changed her onto Purina Pro Plan. The transition was smooth with no real issues. I did a lot of research on dry foods and found that Purina wasn't that great, so again I changed her diet, this time onto Orijen. She was so excited by the smell of it that I gave her it straight away and have done for the last few days. Stupidly I didn't make a slow changeover with part old to part new food.

Her poo has been really runny ever since and she has the most awful smelling gas. Previously she didn't seem to really pass wind and her poo was reasonably firm.

How do I correct my error? I guess it's too late to just go back to the old food and slowly mix in the Orijen? And I want to keep her on Orijen as I bought a 13.5kg bag!!!

Please help!

Many thanks,
Angie

Give her some plain cooked rice for two/three days so her tummy settles and then start phasing in the orijen.

The orijen might keep giving her gas - not all dog react the same with foods. It took months of trial and error to find something Xan wasn't having a "reaction" to.

Agree with Oxide, Orijen is a very rich food, phase it in over a period of time.

Trial and error with food I'm afraid
Bronx gets vile gas with Royal Canin.
Wainwright he is gas free. Unfortunately they are all different.

If you find he is not suited to the Orjen order loads of samples off the internet before you commit to buying a big bag.
Many suppliers are happy to provide a couple of samples

Also agree with Oxide - We had tried many different foods - so long as you phase them in gradually - unfortunatley as already mentioned some foods suits our SBT's better than others xx

Hope Brando is better soon - would love to see some pics of him Smile

Hello boys I certainly could handle both at once .

And back to the original point....

I agree with Oxide about the rice and the phasing the orijen in gradually, for the first couple of days I would mix the orijen with the rice. Some of the other people on here who have tried orijen found that it took a lot longer to settle the stomach whilst on it as its a lot different in make up to other foods so it may be a case of perseverance.

Thank you all for the advice, have had her on rice since. When her stool firmed up (a couple of days ago) I started adding some Orijen in with the rice.

We seem to be getting there! Hope to have her back on Orijen only by the weekend!

She's just had her second jab too, so she will be ready to go out and face the world next week. Can't wait!!

Cheers Smile
